Softball Sweeps Castleton with Pair of Shutouts in Home Opener

COLCHESTER, Vt. - Three Saint Michael's College softball pitchers combined to blank Castleton University, 2-0 and 9-0 in five innings, during the Purple Knights' home opener on Tuesday at Doc Jacobs Field. First-year Jamie Hearn (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Country Day School) tossed her fourth shutout in the nightcap.

RECORDS

  • Saint Michael's (9-11), Castleton (4-8)

DOUBLEHEADER FACTS

  • Hearn's four shutouts are good for fourth in a season in program history, short only of the 11 Meggan (Roberge) Dulude '07 had in 2005 and 2007, and the rookie-record seven she tossed in 2004. Hearn has yielded three runs in her last six starts, with three shutouts, and is tied for fourth in school annals with Megan O'Connor '09 in career shutouts.
  • The Purple Knights' five shutouts this season are their most since firing a school-record 14 in 2007.
  • Saint Michael's improved to 7-3 in the all-time series, hosting Castleton for the first time since 1998.

  • Senior Olivia Joy, 5.2 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 1 K, loss

THE ACTION

  • Devens singled for her team's first hit with one out in the fourth but moved no further.
  • The teams traded leaving a runner at second in each end of the fifth inning.
  • Davidson led off the sixth with a blooper off the right-field line, and junior Meghan Connor (Saint Albans, Vt./BFA-Saint Albans/Endicott) singled to right with two down, putting runners at the corners. Arruda followed by driving a full-count single through the left side to plate the eventual winning run. Hiscock ripped an RBI double down the line in left to score an insurance run.
  • Rideout doubled with one out in the seventh, but Simpson struck out the next batter looking before getting the final Spartan to pop out to Devens at first base.
