McFarland Nets Second Straight OT Winner as Purple Knights Defeat Post, 3-2

SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. - Junior Brennan McFarland (Greeley, Colo./Northern Colorado Eagles) scored his second overtime winner in as many days as Saint Michael's College men's ice hockey completed the sweep of Post University, 3-2, during Northeast-10 Conference play on Friday evening in Cairns Arena.

GAME FACTS
  • McFarland is the third player in program history to score overtime winners on back-to-back nights, joining Tony Ackels '87 on Nov. 1-2, 1985 and Chris Luca '88 on Jan. 23-24, 1988.
  • McFarland netted his school-record-tying second overtime goal of the season, matching Ackels, Luca and senior Zach Taylor (Hanover, Mass./South Shore Kings) for the program mark.
  • The win extended the Purple Knights' program record to six overtime wins this season.
  • Marshall Murphy is tied for third in program history in career wins with 27, joining Bill Heney '92 and Tim Decker '20.
THE ACTION
  • Marshall Murphy made a crucial save at 2:16 in the first period with the blocker on a slap shot from the point from Deloury,
  • Senior Gabriel Gagnon (Mascouche, Quebec/East Coast Wizards) fired a shot on net at 9:32 that went over the shoulder of Richards, but the puck ticked the crossbar and went out of play, keeping the game scoreless.
  • The Eagles fired off four shots in the final 1:20 of the first period, but Marshall Murphy saved three while the other attempt on net was blocked by McFarland.
  • Marshall Murphy made a save on a slap shot from the left faceoff circle at 1:26 in the second period to keep the Eagles off the scoreboard and shut down the power play.
  • Bavis netted the first goal of the game at 4:06 in the second period after finding a loose puck in the crease and chipping it over Richards to the right side of the net, assisted by sophomore Nick Wracker (Columbia, S.C./Northeast Generals) and Macdonald.
  • Patrick Murphy scored a shorthanded unassisted goal at 11:39 in the third period to put the Eagles within one.
  • Less than a minute later, McGuigan gave the Eagles the lead on another shorthanded goal at 12:20, assisted from Hershaw.
  • With 3.1 seconds remaining in regulation, McFarland tied it on a shot from the left faceoff circle assisted by sophomore Quinn McCarthy (Melrose, Mass./Holderness School) and Kantgias to send the game to overtime.The Purple Knights utilized a 6-on-4 power play with Marshall Murphy pulled for an extra skater.
  • Marshall Murphy stopped the Eagles' best overtime chance when Murray beat his defender and took a forehanded wrist shot inside the lower left circle at 3:53.
  • McFarland netted the winner with 42 seconds left from the left faceoff circle on a one-timer, assisted by Kantgias and Dukes.
