Women's Soccer Extends Best Unbeaten Run in 33 Years with Draw at AIC

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - The regionally-ranked Saint Michael's College women's soccer team extended its longest unbeaten streak in 33 years on Saturday thanks to playing Northeast-10 Conference foe American International College to a scoreless tie on Abdow Field. The Purple Knights are 4-0-3 in their last seven games and stood seventh in this week's United Soccer Coaches East Region poll.

RECORDS
  • Saint Michael's (8-1-4, 2-1-4 NE10), AIC (5-5-2, 1-3-2 NE10)
SAINT MICHAEL'S LEADERS
  • Senior Jesse Ferdinand (Maraval, Trinidad and Tobago/High Mowing School), 6 saves
OPPONENT LEADERS
  • Sophomore Sara Avery, 5 saves
GAME FACTS
  • The Purple Knights' seven-game unbeaten run is the third-longest in program history, exceeded only by streaks in 1991 (10) and 1989 (9).
  • Saint Michael's held an 11-10 edge in shots, while AIC trimmed the visitors in corner kicks, 6-4.
  • With three conference games remaining, Saint Michael's remains fourth in the NE10 standings with 10 points. The top four squads host quarterfinal contests in the eight-team NE10 Championship.
THE ACTION
  • In the fifth minute, senior Gabrielle Williams beat her final defender for a breakaway up the right side of the box, but Ferdinand denied her shot with a right-knee save before senior Claire Williams (Saint Leonard, Md./Calvert) cleared the ball from further danger. Williams had a bid herself stopped in the seventh minute, with Avery diving to turn away her drive from 30 yards.
  • Junior Faith Kosiba (Dunstable, Mass./Groton-Dunstable Regional) was rejected by Avery's diving save at the left post in the 17th minute, and classmate Kayleigh Crowell's (Beverly, Mass./Beverly) look from 25 yards out was stuffed by a diving Avery in the 45th minute.
  • Both teams had chances in the closing minutes of regulation to end the stalemate. In the 87th minute, Kosiba sent a shot from 30 yards that sailed just above the crossbar.
  • Early in the 89th minute, senior Katelyn Oliveira's free kick hit the right side netting.
  • Later in the 89th minute, an AIC corner kick was cleared and led to a Saint Michael's transition opportunity that went as far as the edge of the final third before being disrupted.
