Softball Splits Pair in Florida, Johns Becomes Latest Purple Knight with 100 Hits

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. - The Saint Michael's College softball team downed Shepherd University, 3-0, on Tuesday before losing to the University of Pittsburgh Johnstown, 6-5, during The Spring Games at the DiamondPlex Softball Complex. Senior Angelica Johns (Westbrook, Maine/Westbrook) picked up her career 100th hit during the opener, becoming the third Purple Knight in as many game days to reach the milestone.
 
DOUBLEHEADER FACTS
  • Johns became the 15th Purple Knight with 100 hits in a career. She hit the milestone three days after senior Meghan Connor (Saint Albans, Vt./BFA-Saint Albans/Endicott) picked up her 100th hit between a pair of colleges and two days after junior Jenna Devens (Parsippany, N.J./Parsippany) reached 100. Saint Michael's had an off day from games on Monday.
  • Six of the Purple Knights' past seven games were decided by a single run.

THE ACTION
  • The Purple Knights scored all three runs in the bottom of the third inning. Davidson helped her cause by driving in the winning run with a double before Johns and Devens followed with RBI singles.
  • Davidson wriggled out of a bases-loaded, two-out situation unscathed in the fourth before Forte tripled with one down in the fifth but was stranded.
  • Davidson pitched around a two-out error in the seventh to complete her first career shutout.

THE ACTION
  • The teams traded first-inning runs, as Morey knocked a two-out single in the top half before senior Kayla Miehl provided an RBI single in the home half.
  • Johns scored on a two-out error in the third before Davidson and Johns drove in runs in the fourth, with Johns' RBI double making it 4-1. Her two-out RBI single pushed the lead to four in the sixth.
  • Pitt-Johnstown scored twice with two out in the sixth, on Coe's RBI double and an RBI knock from sophomore Jenna Tallman.
  • Still down 5-3, the Mountain Cats plated three runs with two out in the bottom of the seventh, as Charles' two-run single tied the game before sophomore Audrey Paterson, an injury substitution earlier in the frame, walked it off with an RBI single to shallow center field.
