Lanthier Knocks 100th Career Hit, Baseball Splits at Mars Hill

MARS HILL, N.C. - The Saint Michael's College baseball team capped its six-game North Carolina road trip by splitting Mars Hill University on Saturday in a pair of seven-inning affairs, capturing a 2-1 win in the opener before losing an 8-3 contest in the nightcap on Henderson Field. Senior Andrew Lanthier (Orwell, Vt./Fair Haven Union) became the 15th player in the program's 113-year history to reach the 100-hit mark for a career in game two.

DOUBLEHEADER FACTS
  • In addition to picking up his 100th hit, senior Andrew Lanthier (Orwell, Vt./Fair Haven Union) stole his 35th career base during the opener and is now within one of Brian Rayder's '93 program record.
  • Senior Jared Duquette (Morrisonville, N.Y./Saranac) earned a win during his season debut in the opener, when sophomore Keegan Burke (Amherst, N.H./Souhegan) picked up his first college save.

THE ACTION
  • Moynihan popped his second career home run, a two-run shot in the second, after Santos extended the inning with a two-out walk.
  • The teams combined to strand three in scoring position between the bottom of the second and third innings.
  • Weaver singled home Putnam with two out in the fifth to cut the deficit to 2-1.
  • With a pair in scoring position and two down in the bottom of the seventh, Burke induced a groundout to seal the win.

THE ACTION
  • Balian singled home Lanthier, who had doubled, in the opening inning, and Balian's two-run homer made the score 3-0 in the third.
  • After Jones retired the first eight Lions, Troutman homered with two down in the home half of the third.
  • Martin tied the game with a two-run double the following frame, and Troutman's two-run home run keyed a four-run fifth inning that gave Mars Hill a 7-3 advantage.
  • Saint Michael's put two on with one out in the sixth to put the tying run on deck, but Kowalski set down the final two Purple Knights, and the Lions added another insurance run in the sixth.
