Regionally-Ranked Men's Tennis Loses NE10 Affair at Franklin Pierce

RINDGE, N.H. - In a Northeast-10 Conference match that began outdoors before moving inside due to inclement weather, the Saint Michael's College men's tennis team lost to Franklin Pierce University, 6-1, on Wednesday. The Purple Knights were ninth in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) East Region poll.

  • In two matches between the teams this season, the Purple Knights and Ravens have gone to three sets eight times in 12 singles matches.
THE ACTION
  • Franklin Pierce opened doubles play with back-to-back wins to capture the 1-0 lead, but only after senior Tristian Du Plessis (Rustenburg, South Africa/Hoërskool Waterkloof/Wallace State CC) and junior Sergio Barroso (Madrid, Spain/Colegio Montpellier) lost by a 6-3 margin at No. 1.
  • Moser and van den Broek sided for a 6-3 victory in the third spot.
  • The Ravens led 3-0, including as Du Plessis had a close second set in a 6-0, 6-4 loss at No. 1, when the match moved indoors.
  • In the third spot, Barroso was in the late stages of his second set when the venue change occurred. An eventual 6-1, 5-7, 7-5 setback provided the hosts the clinching fourth point.
  • Van den Broek lost 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 at No. 4 before first-year Garrett Brooker (Charleston, S.C./Oceanside Collegiate Academy) suffered a 6-4, 6-0 defeat in the sixth spot.
  • Moser rounded out the contest by claiming a 6-4, 4-6, 10-3 win at No. 5, securing the victory on the strength of taking a third-set super tiebreaker.
