Murphy's Late Winner Sends Men's Lacrosse Past No. 7 Saint Anselm, 15-13

MANCHESTER, N.H. - The Saint Michael's College men's lacrosse team scored the final four goals, including sophomore Sean Murphy's (Medway, Mass./Medway) winner with 1:02 to play, and upended seventh-ranked Saint Anselm College, 15-13, during Northeast-10 Conference play on Wednesday at Grappone Stadium. The Purple Knights received votes toward this week's United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) national poll while landing third in the New England Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (NEILA) rankings. The Hawks' ranking is according to the USILA, and they are first in the region, garnering all four first-place votes.

GAME FACTS
  • Saint Michael's downed a ranked foe for the first time since a 12-11 win against No. 9 Lake Erie College on March 9, 2022, but for the first time against a ranked NE10 squad since an 11-9 upset of No. 2 Adelphi University on April 13, 2013.
  • The Purple Knights are now tied with Bentley University for fourth in the NE10 standings with two regular-season games left; the top six make the postseason, and the top four host a first-round playoff game.
  • Saint Michael's played a ranked opponent for the third straight game. The Purple and Gold narrowly lost to No. 14 Bentley, 16-15 in overtime, on April 9 and against No. 10 Pace University, 15-11, on Saturday.
  • Saint Anselm was the last NE10 team with a spotless home mark, having entered the day with a 3-0 record in Grappone Stadium.
  • The Purple Knights defeated the Hawks for the first time since April 15, 2015, while winning on Saint Anselm's campus for the first time since April 19, 1997.

THE ACTION
  • The Purple Knights scored six of the game's first seven goals, leading 6-1 by 3:21 of the opening quarter. Chirgwin had two goals and an assist in that time, while Murphy found the net twice.
  • Balfour's strike still had his team up 7-3 at 7:57 of the second quarter.
  • Saint Anselm countered with eight of the next nine goals, claiming an 11-8 lead with 2:51 left in the third. Lombardi keyed the stretch with two goals and a helper.
  • The Purple Knights needed only 1:29 to tie the game, as Reyes struck twice (2:07, 1:40) in 27 seconds, with the second assisted by Murphy, who then found the equalizer with 38 seconds to go.
  • The Hawks opened the fourth quarter with back-to-back goals, as Davis' strike made it 13-11 by 10:31.
  • Simonson scored 22 seconds after that before cutting through the crease and taking Reyes' feed en route to burying the tying goal with 5:35 left.
  • Just outside of a minute, Murphy cut around the attack zone and potted the eventual winner at 1:02.
  • A penalty was assessed to the Hawks shortly thereafter, and Chirgwin put home a man-up marker on a vacated cage at 31 seconds to seal the victory.
