Regionally-Ranked Men's Tennis Loses 4-3 Decision to Assumption

COLCHESTER, Vt. - The regionally-ranked Saint Michael's College men's tennis team lost to Assumption University, 4-3, on Saturday during Northeast-10 Conference play. The contest began on the SMC Tennis Courts and concluded indoors at the Tarrant Recreation Center. The Purple Knights were ninth in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) East Region poll.

LEADERS MATCH NOTES
  • Brooker broke a program record for wins by a first-year with his 20th this season between singles and doubles. His 12 doubles wins are also a program first-year record.
  • Barroso earned his 27th career doubles win, tying former teammate Josh Weiss '23 for seventh in program history. With 23 wins this year between singles and doubles, Barroso is one win shy of matching another former teammate, Jason Boucher '23, for the program record.
  • The Purple Knights suffered their third 4-3 loss of the season.
THE ACTION
  • Assumption won the opening two doubles matches to take the first point, with Brooker and first-year Ruben Weijer (Son, Noord-Brabant, The Netherlands/Frits Philips Lyceum) coming the closest to victory during a 6-3 loss at No. 3.
  • In the top spot, Barroso and Du Plessis improved to 16-9 overall this season, including 5-3 in NE10 play, thanks to a 6-3 triumph.
  • The Greyhounds opened singles play with a trio of close decisions to capture the victory. Du Plessis lost 6-2, 6-4 at No. 1, first-year Jack Li (San Diego, Calif./San Marcos) suffered a 6-4, 7-5 setback in the second spot, and Barroso was downed 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 at No. 4.
  • Van den Broek forged a 6-3, 5-7, 6-2 win at No. 3 to get his team on the board, and Moser captured a close opening set in a 7-5, 6-0 victory in the fifth position.
  • Brooker trailed 6-4, 2-1 at No. 6 before inclement weather forced the remainder of his match indoors. He rallied to take the final five games in his second set before clinching the match in a third-set super tiebreaker, 4-6, 6-2, 10-8.
