Softball Splits NE10 Doubleheader at Assumption

WORCESTER, Mass. - The Saint Michael's College softball team split with Assumption University, losing game one 4-3 and winning game two 3-1, during a Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader on Saturday at Normand Marois Field.

DOUBLEHEADER FACTS
  • Senior Angelica Johns (Westbrook, Maine/Westbrook) is now tied for fifth in program history in career runs (55).
  • Classmate Meghan Connor (Saint Albans, Vt./BFA-Saint Albans/Endicott) moved into ninth in RBI (52) while pushing her hit total to 94 in three years.
  • Junior Kelleigh Simpson (West Burke, Vt./Lyndon Institute) tossed her second complete game in a row, also going the distance last weekend against The College of Saint Rose, for the win in game two.

THE ACTION
  • Connor scored from third on a throwing error in the top of the third as first-year Brynlyn Owens (Limon, Colo./Limon) stole second, and Owens scored on a single to right by Sroczinski to give the visitors a 2-0 lead.
  • The Purple Knights tacked on another run in the top of the fourth inning when Davidson scored on a wild pitch.
  • The Greyhounds scored one run in the bottom half of the fourth on a sacrifice fly from senior Corin Mahan.
  • Assumption cut the deficit to one in the home half of the fifth on an RBI single by Cahill.
  • Down 3-2 heading into the seventh, the hosts tied the game when Larson scored on an error, and Heim walked it off on a single to left field to drive in Geremia.

THE ACTION
  • Assumption scored its only run of game two in the second inning when Dwyer stole third and advanced home on a throwing error to give the hosts a 1-0 lead.
  • Connor tied the game in the third inning after driving home Johns, and Welter walked with the bases loaded later in the frame to put the Purple Knights in front.
  • Simpson proceeded to allow only three base runners from the third to sixth inning.
  • Connor doubled to left field in the top of the seventh inning to score Johns with an insurance run.
  • Assumption had two on with two out in the home half, but the batter representing the winning run grounded out to end the game.
