Connor Records 100th Hit as Softball Drops NE10 Doubleheader at Saint Anselm

MANCHESTER, N.H. - The Saint Michael's College softball team lost both ends of a Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader against Saint Anselm College, 5-2 and 9-8 in eight innings, on Tuesday at the South Athletic Fields. Senior Meghan Connor (Saint Albans, Vt./BFA-Saint Albans/Endicott) collected her 100th career hit as a Purple Knight with her single in the fourth inning of game two.

DOUBLEHEADER FACTS
  • Connor now has 101 hits in 111 games over three years as a Purple Knight, becoming the 16th player in program history to reach the milestone. She owns 131 hits in 134 games between Saint Michael's and Endicott College. Connor also swatted her 12th home run as a Purple Knight, good for a tie for fifth in school annals.
  • With six walks during the twinbill, junior Jenna Devens (Parsippany, N.J./Parsippany) broke the program's single-season walks record with 26 on the year, passing SMC Athletic Hall of Famer Noelle Gill '05, who walked 25 times in 2004. Devens' four free passes in game two were the most by a Purple Knight in at least 20 years.

THE ACTION
  • The Hawks took the lead in the bottom of the first inning when Wiberg doubled to left field to drive in Caputo. Wiberg then came around to score on a fielding error to make the score 2-0.
  • Connor blasted a two-run home run to left field in the top of the fifth inning to tie the game at two.
  • The Hawks responded when Tournas knocked a two-out, two-run double in the bottom half of the inning to give the hosts a 4-2 lead.
  • Saint Anselm added one more run in the bottom of the sixth after Calkin scored on Wiberg's sac fly to make the score 5-2.

THE ACTION
  • Tardugno knocked a double to left field that scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning to give the Hawks an early lead.
  • Kelliher singled to left in the top of the second inning to score Morey and Devens and tie the game at two.
  • Saint Anselm scored its third run of the game in the bottom of the second when Caputo doubled to right center and junior Audrey Arsenault scored from third.
  • The Purple Knights took a 5-3 lead in the top of the third inning after Davidson scored on a wild pitch, and Johns and Kelliher both drove in runs to give the visitors a two-run lead.
  • The Hawks cut the lead down to one in the home half after Tardugno doubled to left center to score Wiberg.
  • Johns doubled the lead for the Purple and Gold on a two-out single to right center that scored Devens in the top of the fourth inning.
  • Saint Anselm tied it at six in the bottom of the fourth after O'Hara and Tardugno both single to drive in runs.
  • O'Hara gave the hosts a two-run lead in the fifth inning on a two-run double.
  • Scorczinski plated Connor in the top of the sixth inning to make the score 8-7 in favor of Saint Anselm, and Johns drew a two-out bases-loaded walk in the top of the seventh to tie the game.
  • The Hawks threatened with two outs in the bottom of the seventh after Calkins tripled to center, but Davidson retired the next batter to send the game to extra innings.
  • Wiberg hit a solo home run to right center on the first pitch of the bottom of the eighth to walk it off for the Hawks.
