Men's Lacrosse Downs AIC in Regular-Season Finale, Claims No. 5 Seed in Postseason

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - The Saint Michael's College men's lacrosse team capped the regular season with its second consecutive 15-6 Northeast-10 Conference victory, this time over American International College on Tuesday at Abdow Field. The Purple Knights nailed down the No. 5 seed in the upcoming NE10 Championship and will visit No. 4 Bentley University on Saturday for a first-round game at 7 p.m.
 
Saint Michael's received votes toward this week's United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) national rankings, only one vote short of a national ranking, while sitting third in the New England Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (NEILA) poll.

GAME FACTS
  • Saint Michael's has won nine games for the eighth time and is two short of a program record for victories, reached in 2012 and 2013.
  • The Purple Knights finished above .500 in NE10 play for the first time since 2013, with their six league wins the program's most since a 9-2 finish in 2013.
  • By pushing his career goals total to 97, Simonson passed Kevin Duffy '03 (95) to take over fifth in program history. He also matched Mike Boerma '08 and Marty Vanzo '13 for fifth in points (144). Simonson's 58 points this season are five short of a program record set in 1988 by Mike Riddell '88 and matched in 1993 by Matt Pagen '95.
  • Regan became the third Purple Knight netminder to win nine games in a season, joining Jeff Hannon '08 (9 in 2006) and Chris DeMairo '13 (11 in 2012 and 2013).
THE ACTION
  • Reyes scored twice in 1:10 to give the Purple Knights a 2-0 edge by 11:11 of the first quarter.
  • AIC countered with four of the next five goals, with Bamford scoring twice, and the hosts led 4-3 with 9:48 left in the second frame.
  • Saint Michael's allowed only two goals over the final 39:48, ending the game on a 12-2 run.
  • Wiercinski (8:09) and Chirgwin (7:15) scored in succession to provide the visitors a 5-4 edge and the lead for good. Simonson netted three of his team's next five goals before Morgan scored twice in the fourth period.
