Men's Lacrosse Downed in Overtime by No. 14 Bentley, 16-15

COLCHESTER, Vt. - A goal by No. 14 Bentley University as the overtime buzzer sounded was all that separated the nationally-regarded Saint Michael's College men's lacrosse team and the Falcons from a second extra session in the visitors' 16-15 victory on Tuesday evening at Duffy Field.

The Northeast-10 Conference affair featured the Purple Knights, who received votes toward this week's United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) national poll while taking fourth in the New England Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (NEILA) poll, and Bentley, ranked 14th nationally and third regionally.

GAME FACTS

  • The Purple and Gold remained fourth in the NE10, which takes its top six into the postseason, with four games to play, half a game ahead of Bentley.
  • Neither team led by more than two goals.
THE ACTION
  • The Purple Knights turned a 2-1 deficit into a two-goal edge thanks to a 3-0 first-quarter run, as Chirgwin (10:28) scored man-up before Woods (9:02) and Simonson (5:39) also tallied.
  • Bentley countered with five of the next six goals, with five players scoring, and led 7-5 by 11:12 of the second frame.
  • Hughes (5:11) and Sinibaldi (4:21) scored 50 seconds apart later in the stanza to force an 8-all tie, but senior Conor Segreti scored two man-up markers one minute apart to make it 10-8 at 10:54 of the third.
  • The Purple Knights utilized a 5-1 run to push back in front. Five different players scored, with Hughes notching a goal and an assist, while his team took an 11-10 lead with 0.9 seconds left in the third when sophomore Gavin Proutt's (Baltimore, Md./Boys' Latin School of Maryland) pass from deep in his own zone found Simonson behind the defense just outside the crease at the other end. Chirgwin added a go-ahead strike at 10:25 of the fourth, and Sinibaldi produced a 13-11 edge 1:03 later.
  • Witt (5:40) and Thorn-Guillaro (4:51) leveled the score late in regulation before Hughes once again gave the Purple Knights a lead, with 4:14 left. However, Witt netted the tying man-up marker at 2:33.
  • The remainder of regulation featured a pair of turnovers by each team and a critical save by Regan with 1:58 left, ensuring overtime.
  • In the four-minute, sudden-victory extra session, Wilson won the faceoff before the Purple Knights sent a pair of shots wide on their first possession.
  • Regan's save at 1:17 led to a fast-break opportunity for his team, but two subsequent shots were off target, including a bid off the post with 27 seconds left.
  • Following a clear by Bentley, junior David Gagnon gathered a loose ball and fired a shot just before the buzzer, which found the upper left corner as time expired.
