Match Recap: Men's Tennis |

Van den Broek Advances at ITA East Regional Championship

FLUSHING, N.Y. - Saint Michael's College men's tennis junior Julius van den Broek (Bergschenhoek, The Netherlands/Wolfert Lyceum) advanced to the singles round of 32 during Friday's opening day of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) East Regional Championship. The tournament, which features singles and doubles draws, is taking place at the United States Tennis Association (USTA) Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, home of the US Open grand slam event since 1978.

LEADERS TOURNAMENT FACTS
  • The Purple Knights had three players entered in the 67-slot singles draw while one doubles tandem was placed among 28 spots in that bracket.
  • Saint Michael's men's tennis players competed at the ITA East Regional Championship for only the second time, and the first since eight took part in the 2019 event.
THE ACTION
  • Van den Broek highlighted the Purple Knights' day on court by downing Chestnut Hill College sophomore Pablo Cervera, 3-6, 6-3, 10-2, in the round of 64. He advances to Saturday's round of 32, where he will oppose Thomas Jefferson University senior Mario Antonio, the bracket's fifth seed.
  • Graduate student Tristian Du Plessis (Rustenburg, South Africa/Hoërskool Waterkloof/Wallace State CC) lost in the round of 64 to Northeast-10 Conference counterpart Noé Martin, 6-2, 6-4. Martin, a Franklin Pierce University graduate student, landed on the NE10 All-Conference first team last spring.
  • Senior Jackson Moser (Missouri City, Texas/Ridge Point) also dropped a round of 64 match, 6-2, 6-1, against Queens College sophomore Tim Andersson, the 14th seed. Andersson earned East Coast Conference (ECC) All-Conference laurels in the spring.
  • In their first match as college doubles partners, Du Plessis and Moser were trimmed in the round of 32, 8-6, by the fifth-seeded tandem in the tournament, Saint Thomas Aquinas College sophomore Don Vinz Lominoque and first-year Nagamitsu Kuroda.
