DelVecchio Assists Both Tallies, Women's Soccer Wins School-Record Seventh Straight

WORCESTER, Mass. - Senior Bella DelVecchio (Saugus, Mass./Bishop Fenwick) lent a pair of second-half assists, and the Saint Michael's College women's soccer team closed the regular season with a 2-0 win at Assumption University on Wednesday during Northeast 10 Conference play at Marois Field.

The Purple Knights, who set a school record with their seventh consecutive victory, earned votes toward this week's United Soccer Coaches national poll and were third in today's first NCAA East Region rankings. As the No. 3 seed in the upcoming NE10 Championship, they will host their initial postseason contest in 36 years on Sunday when they take on No. 6 Bentley at 1 p.m. in a rematch of last year's first-round contest, won 1-0 by the Falcons.

  • Laizer picked up her eighth shutout of the season, tying a school record shared by Trish Hannan '90 (1989) and Katie Escobedo '23 (2022). The eight clean sheets already tie her with Brittany Cocozza '12 for sixth in program history for a career. Laizer's school-record 15 wins put her in a three-way tie for fifth in school annals for a career.
  • DelVecchio's 16 career assists put her in a three-way tie for fifth in program history, and are the most since 2004 graduates Niki Pelletier (24) and Suzanne Fontas (16) played their final season 22 years ago.
  • The Purple Knights are 10-1 away from home, including 8-1 in true road games.
  • Saint Michael's defeated Assumption for the first time since Oct. 8, 2011, downing the Greyhounds in Worcester for the first time since Oct. 24, 2008.
  • Assumption held leads in shots (13-10) and corner kicks (6-3).
THE ACTION
  • Laizer leapt toward the upper left corner to deny senior Haley Brown's sixth-minute bid.
  • In the 21st minute, sophomore Scarlett Brookes' (Rockaway, N.J./Morris Knolls) shot was parried off the post by Provost, and a defender cleared the loose ball out of danger.
  • DelVecchio's 67th-minute free kick was tapped off the crossbar by a leaping Provost, but McDonough headed home the rebound for her second second-half game-winner in as many games.
  • DelVecchio served a corner kick in the 87th minute that Palmese bodied in for an insurance strike.
