Men's Basketball Downs Molloy, 85-78, Wins Fifth in Six Tries

ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. - The Saint Michael's College men's basketball team won for the fifth time in six games by capturing a 85-78 victory over Molloy University on Wednesday afternoon in Bob Houlihan Gymnasium.

  • Saint Michael's set a school record for most free throw attempts without a miss, finishing 21-for-21, including 15-for-15 in the second half.
  • The Purple Knights moved to 8-1 in the all-time series, with eight of the nine meetings decided by single digits.
  • The Purple and Gold handed out 16 assists while committing only nine turnovers.
THE ACTION
  • Neither team led by more than five points until Floyd converted a three-point play with 48 seconds left in the opening half (38-32), but the Lions tied the game by halftime, as Timberlake buried a pair of three-pointers, including on a buzzer beater. The teams combined for eight lead changes and seven ties in the opening stanza.
  • The Purple Knights twice led by five points early in the second half, including 45-40 on Marold's pair of free throws at 17:32, before Merchant capped a 13-5 run with a triple that swung Molloy into the lead (53-50) by 13:57.
  • Saint Michael's later put together an 11-0 run to take the lead for good, as Dumont scored the first five points. Fellow reserves De Leon (10:13) and Henaghen (9:44) buried threes 29 seconds apart to push the margin to 63-55.
  • After Timberlake's triple cut the deficit to 71-70 with 4:33 left, Briscoe and Littleton canned treys of their own 36 seconds apart to make it a seven-point game by 3:32. Kenney's dunk with 55 seconds remaining created a game-high 81-72 margin.
  • Merchant and Stokel wrapped buckets around a turnover, drawing Molloy within 81-76 at 36 seconds, and the hosts had a chance to cut the deficit to a single possession but missed a shot at 11 ticks, and Kenney snagged a board before hitting a pair of key free throws.
