Softball Swept in NE10 Twinbill by Nationally-Regarded Pace

PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. - The Saint Michael's College softball team opened Northeast-10 Conference play with a pair of losses against Pace University, 2-0 and 3-2, on Saturday at Barry X. Finnerty Field. The Setters received a vote toward this week's National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) national poll.

THE ACTION
  • Gorman singled with two down in the top of the second inning before stealing second and Booska countered with a one-out walk in the home half, but neither came around to score.
  • Playing the visiting team after inclement weather moved the doubleheader to its home field, Pace broke through on Valle's one-out, two-run single in the fifth inning. Eaton pitched around two additional singles that frame to prevent further damage.
  • Underfer walked with one out in the sixth to bring the tying run to the plate, but Garcia fanned the final two batters that inning before retiring all three Purple Knights in the seventh.

THE ACTION
  • Gorman and sophomore Mikayla Hughes came through with RBI singles in the second inning, and Matsuda scored on a passed ball to make it 3-0 in the third.
  • Devens blasted her 23rd career home run with one out in the fourth, and senior Kiera Parker (Weymouth, Mass./Framingham/Stevenson) scored on a two-out wild pitch in the fifth to bring Saint Michael's within a run.
  • Booska singled with two down in the sixth before the next batter struck out, and Garcia came out of the bullpen to nail down a 1-2-3 seventh.
