Devens Breaks Program Hits Record as Softball Splits Saint Anselm

COLCHESTER, Vt. - Senior Jenna Devens (Parsippany, N.J./Parsippany) became the Saint Michael's College softball program's career hits leader in the Purple Knights' split of Northeast-10 Conference foe Saint Anselm College on Thursday at Doc Jacobs Field. The hosts captured a 7-2 decision in the opener but lost 3-2 in the nightcap.

DOUBLEHEADER FACTS
  • Devens picked up three hits on Thursday, with her fifth-inning single in the second contest the 166th of her career, surpassing Ashley Harkins' '09 16-year-old program record (165). Devens also holds school records for career home runs (24), RBI (96), doubles (37) and walks (65).
  • Saint Michael's split a doubleheader with Saint Anselm for the second time this year, also taking the opener 7-2 during a twinbill in Florida on March 21. The Purple Knights defeated the Hawks in Colchester for the first time since April 18, 2017.

THE ACTION
  • Saint Anselm scored single runs in the first two innings, as Arsenault's RBI single plated the opening run before Mason's fielder's choice pushed the lead to 2-0.
  • The Purple Knights countered with four runs in the bottom of the second on just two hits. Junior Brooke Edgerly (Morley, Mich./Morley Stanwood) walked with the bases loaded to force home the initial run before Davidson's two-run single back through the box gave the hosts the lead for good. She later came around to score on Bishop's two-out knock.
  • Booska scored on Nordahl's groundout the next inning, and the hosts added single runs on two-out errors in both the fifth and sixth innings.

THE ACTION
  • Reitmeyer singled home Arsenault in the first inning before Arsenault led off the third with a home run, and the Hawks again led 2-0.
  • After Ryan was unscathed the first time through the Purple Knight order, Edgerly dumped a leadoff single into center field to begin the fourth before the hosts scored twice with two down. Smith came through with an opposite-field RBI single and first-year Ella Nickerson (South Portland, Maine/South Portland) walked with the bases loaded to force home the tying run.
  • Arsenault led off the following frame with another home run.
  • Nordahl led off the home half with a single before Devens drilled a single to center for her record 166th hit, but the duo was stranded for the Purple Knights' final sustained threat.
