Men's Tennis Caps Season with 5-2 Victory Over Southern New Hampshire

COLCHESTER, Vt. - All three graduating players earned victories as the Saint Michael's College men's tennis team capped its season with a 5-2 Senior Day victory over Northeast-10 Conference foe Southern New Hampshire University on Saturday in the Tarrant Recreation Center.
 
The Purple Knights honored graduate student Tristian Du Plessis (Rustenburg, South Africa/Hoërskool Waterkloof/Wallace State CC) and seniors Sergio Barroso (Madrid, Spain/Colegio Montpellier) and Jackson Moser (Missouri City, Texas/Ridge Point) prior to their final college match.

MATCH FACTS
  • Saint Michael's defeated Southern New Hampshire for the first time since April 8, 2009, and at home for the first time since Sept. 30, 2007.
  • The Purple Knights' four conference wins are their most since going 5-6 in 2011-12.
  • In just seven semesters, Barroso finished his career with 66 wins between singles and doubles, good for second in program history, just two shy of former teammate Jason Boucher's '23 program record (68). His 32 singles wins and 34 doubles victories both tie him for third in school annals.
  • In two seasons together, Barroso and Du Plessis finished second in program history for wins by a doubles tandem (23), two short a school mark set by Kevin Birch '93 and Phil Noto '93. Brooker and Moser tied for ninth with 12 wins, also pairing for just two years.
  • Du Plessis wrapped up a five-year college career with 103 victories between a pair of institutions. Fifty of those wins came as a Purple Knight, only one shy of the program's top 10. In just three years at Saint Michael's, he ended up fifth in program history in career doubles wins (32).
THE ACTION
  • Effler and Macpherson reached the end of their doubles match first, taking a 6-3 decision in the No. 3 spot to finish the season 6-2 in NE10 play.
  • Barroso and Du Plessis were tied 2-2 in the first position during an eventual 6-2 setback, and Brooker and Moser rallied from down 5-2 to within 5-4 before losing a 6-4 decision at No. 2. The Penmen led 1-0 thanks to garnering the doubles point.
  • Du Plessis opened singles play with a 6-3, 6-2 victory in the top spot against the region's 11th-ranked player, who entered the day 6-3 in league action and had defeated Du Plessis, 6-4, 6-2, as recently as 17 days prior.
  • Hegedus-Kyster captured a 6-3, 6-3 contest at No. 4 before Barroso finished off a 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 2 to provide the Purple Knights a 3-1 lead.
  • Junior Julius van den Broek (Bergschenhoek, The Netherlands/Wolfert Lyceum) claimed the opening set at No. 3, 6-4, before dropping consecutive 7-5 sets in a loss that allowed the visitors to climb within 3-2. Van den Broek still finished the year 9-4 overall and 5-2 in league play.
  • Moser drilled an ace for the clinching point in a 6-1, 6-1 victory in the sixth position that also locked down the Purple Knights' win. He ended the year 6-2 in NE10 contests.
  • Brooker added an insurance win by a 6-0, 6-3 count at No. 5.
