COLCHESTER, Vt. - Saint Michael's College men's ice hockey senior defenseman
David Ciancio (Scituate, R.I./Seahawks Hockey Club) was named a New England Hockey Writers Association (NEHWA) Division II/III All-Star for the second time this week, one of 20 student-athletes from around the region recognized.
Â
Ciancio, who was also lauded as a junior, joins SMC Athletic Hall of Famers
Michel Dupont '98 (3),
John Gurskis '98 (2) and
Kyle Lanfear '98 (2) as the lone student-athletes in program history to land NEHWA All-New England on multiple occasions. Ciancio was one of only two Northeast-10 Conference players honored this year.
Â
A second-year captain, Ciancio capped a standout career by hoisting the NE10 Championship trophy last month and claiming tournament most valuable player honors after scoring twice and adding an assist in the title game, a 5-1 victory at top-seeded Saint Anselm College. Ciancio earned a spot on the NE10 All-Conference first team for the second straight year and advanced to the finalist stage for the Joe Concannon Award, which recognizes the top American-born men's player at an NCAA Division II/III institution in New England.
Â
Ciancio finished his career with 69 points and 190 blocks in 106 contests. He led the NE10 in blocked shots (52) this winter, tied for second in power-play goals (4), tied for third in goals (13), and tied for sixth in points (25). In addition to his all-league accolade as a junior, he won 2023-24 NE10 Co-Defensive Player of the Year and the NE10 Scholar-Athlete Sport Excellence Award. Ciancio earned the NE10 Elite 24 Award his sophomore year thanks to holding the highest grade-point average among student-athletes competing in the league title game.
