Women's Tennis Opens Season with Victories in Two Different States

COLCHESTER, Vt./PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. - Junior Emma Gredenhag (Jacksonville, Fla./Bishop Kenny), sophomore Lucy McPherson (Vancouver, British Columbia/Magee Secondary School), and first-year Olivia Larsen (Riverview, New Brunswick/Riverview) all went 4-0 as the Saint Michael's College women's tennis team opened the season with a pair of victories on Saturday.
 
In a split-state twinbill, the Purple Knights took down 2025 NCAA Division III Tournament qualifier State University of Farmingdale, 7-0, in the Tarrant Recreation Center during the morning. After a trip across Lake Champlain, Saint Michael's downed SUNY Plattsburgh, 6-1, in an afternoon meeting on the Memorial Tennis Courts.

DOUBLEHEADER FACTS
  • Larsen, McPherson and first-year Ana Maria Ricaurte (Guayaquil, Ecuador/Colegio Alemán Humboldt de Guayaquil) all earned their first college victories in the opener.
  • The Purple Knights played twice on the same day for the first time since March 20, 2014, when they split decisions against Hope College and Bethel University in Kissimmee, Fla.
  • Saturday was the fifth instance of Saint Michael's playing twice on the same day, but the first time the matches occurred at different sites, and the first occasion of the Purple Knights winning twice.

THE ACTION
  • The doubles duos of Gredenhag/McPherson (No. 1), Larsen/Xu (No. 2) and Ricaurte/Rocha (No. 3) combined to lose only one game as each tandem made their debut together. Gredenhag and McPherson blanked their foes at No. 1 to clinch the opening doubles point, while Larsen and Xu also posted a 6-0 win.
  • All six Purple Knights won in straight sets during singles action, including Xu not dropping a game in the fourth spot. Gredenhag's 6-1, 6-3 triumph in the third position clinched the team win.
  • Ricaurte (7-5, 6-0) and Rocha (6-4, 6-2) faced the stoutest tests, at No. 5 and 6, respectively, during their opening sets before easing to second-set wins.

THE ACTION
  • In their first doubles match together, Larsen and Ricaurte nabbed a 6-1 victory in the second spot before junior Jaylin Bedard (Fairfield, Vt./BFA-Saint Albans) and sophomore Kasey Johnson (Naples, Maine/Lake Region) lost in their first match together at No. 3. Gredenhag and McPherson broke the deadlock and secured the doubles point by virtue of a 6-2 triumph in the top position.
  • Saint Michael's clinched its second team victory of the day when Gredenhag (No. 3), Xu (No. 4) and Larsen (No. 2) surrendered a total of four games in the first three completed singles matches.
  • Rocha claimed a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 5, and McPherson put together a 6-2, 6-3 victory in the top spot.
  • Junior Lyla Rouleau (Saint Albans, Vt./BFA-Saint Albans) won her opening set at No. 6 during a narrow 5-7, 6-4, 10-6 loss in her season debut.
