Softball Splits on Final Day in Florida, Defeats Post in Nightcap

VIERA WEST, Fla. - The Saint Michael's College softball team capped a 10-game Spring Break trip to Florida with an 11-1 win over Post University on Thursday during the Space Coast Spring Games at the United States Specialty Sports Association (USSSA) Space Coast Complex. The Purple Knights lost their opener to Molloy University, 6-5.
 
DOUBLEHEADER FACTS
  • Senior CJ Davidson (Canyon Lake, Calif./Vista Murrieta), who pushed her career hit total to 91, socked two triples on Thursday to tie Christine Cole '94 for third in program history for a career (8). She also passed Megan O'Connor '09 (59) to take over fifth in runs (60).

THE ACTION
  • Edgerly scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the first inning before junior Abreanna Smith (Whitewright, Texas/Whitewright) singled back through the box to plate Davidson.
  • McGurk led off the fourth with an inside-the-park home run.
  • Three more runs scored in the home half, keyed by Edgerly's RBI single. The Purple Knights led 5-1.
  • The first four batters reached in the Lion sixth, including McGurk (2 RBI) and Bueno (RBI) knocking run-scoring consecutive triples, and sophomore Casey Kissinger's go-ahead RBI knock with two down finished off a five-run frame.
  • In the seventh, Edgerly led off with a walk and stole second with two down, but Smith's hard grounder up the middle ricocheted off of Secondino to shortstop Kissinger, who finished the game-ending 1-6-3 play.

THE ACTION
  • Edgerly scored on a first-inning error before Owens was plated on a two-out error in the second.
  • Liimatainen's two-out RBI single scored Davidson to make it 3-0 in the third, and Bull singled home Edgerly in the fifth.
  • Saint Michael's put the game out of reach with seven runs on six hits in the seventh inning, capped by Davidson's two-run triple with two out and subsequent scoring on an error.
  • Davidson came within one out of a shutout, yielding the Eagles' lone run when graduate student Sydney Jones grounded out for her team's second out in the home half.
