NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Junior southpaw
Casey Gunnip (Cicero, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse/Saint Rose) spun a complete-game five-hitter to send the Saint Michael's College baseball team past Southern Connecticut State University, 8-1, in game one of a Northeast 10 Conference doubleheader on Saturday in the Ballpark at SCSU. The Owls took the nightcap, 9-7 in seven innings, holding off a late Purple Knight rally.

- Gunnip tossed the Purple Knights' first nine-inning complete game since Danté Moran '21 on March 22, 2019, during a 10-9 win against Saint Lawrence University in Fort Myers, Fla. Curt Echo '16 had recorded the program's last nine-inning complete game in NE10 play on April 29, 2016, in a 3-1 win at home versus Bentley University. Gunnip worked the most innings by a Saint Michael's southpaw since Peter Cross '17 hurled 9.1 frames in a 3-2 loss at Bentley on April 18, 2015, and posted the first nine-inning complete game by a Purple Knight lefty since Alex Winkelmann '17 on April 18, 2014, in a 4-1 victory over Assumption University at Conaty Park in Smithfield, R.I.
- Senior Sam Cavossa (East Falmouth, Mass./The Winchendon School) upped his career runs total to 84, breaking Nicky Elderton's '15 program record (83). With 141 hits, he is five shy of Alec Tice's '14 school mark (146) and is tied for sixth in RBI with Kevin Harutunian '06 (68).
- Graduate student Max Kolifrath (Millbury, Mass./Millbury) tied Trevor Allen '19 for third in program history with 61 career bases on balls.
- The Purple Knights split a doubleheader at Southern Connecticut State for the second straight year after losing their first five meets on the Owls' home field.

THE ACTION
- The Purple Knights scored three runs in the second inning thanks to run-scoring hits from Arsenault (single) and Ayala (double) and Weber's first sacrifice fly.
- Junior Alex Cappellucci countered with a sac fly in the home half, but Gunnip left a pair in scoring position by fanning the final two Owls.
- Cavossa's two-out RBI single in the fourth made it 4-1 before Gilboy added a sac fly in the sixth.

THE ACTION
- Staubley's RBI single kicked off a three-run first inning for the hosts.
- Gilboy singled home Pattison in the third before Cavossa swiped home to make it 3-2.
- Chard picked up an RBI knock and scored in a two-run fourth before the Owls scored three runs on one hit - Karras' RBI single - to push the lead to 8-2 in the fifth.
