Wilson's First College Win Sends Softball Past Saint Anselm, 3-2

COLCHESTER, Vt. - The Saint Michael's College softball team earned its second consecutive Northeast 10 Conference doubleheader split on Wednesday at Doc Jacobs Field, taking the nightcap over Saint Anselm College, 3-2, after falling in the opener, 6-3. First-year Alexis Wilson (Barnstead, N.H./Prospect Mountain) earned her first college victory in game two.

  • Wilson earned her first college win during the second contest, scattering eight hits in a complete-game effort.

THE ACTION
  • Reitmeyer's ground-rule double scored Tardugno in the first inning before juniors Abby Wrinn and Sarah Cipriani added consecutive RBI singles with two out in the third to make it 3-0.
  • Davidson countered with a two-out RBI knock in the home half.
  • Reitmeyer, junior Caitlyn Duquette and sophomore Alexa Salafia poked consecutive run-scoring singles in the fourth that pushed the lead to 6-1.
  • Owens' two-out RBI single in the sixth and Nordahl's two-out RBI single in the seventh brought the Purple Knights within 6-3, but the batter representing the winning run popped out with the bases loaded for the game's final out in the seventh.

THE ACTION
  • Nordahl's infield single with two out in the second inning scored Flaherty with the game's first run.
  • Reitmeyer's RBI double plated Tardugno the following inning before Duquette followed with a go-ahead single.
  • Saint Michael's immediately countered in the home half of the third, with Flaherty's two-run double to the right-center gap putting her team up for good.
  • Wilson pitched out of trouble in the fifth, when the first two Hawks reached on singles before eventually pulling off a double steal with two down, but the final batter grounded out.
  • Saint Anselm left the bases loaded in the sixth, when Wilson capped a nine-pitch at bat with the final batter on a strikeout.
  • The Hawks again put the first two runners on in the seventh before a sac bunt advanced them 60 feet, but the next batter popped out on the first pitch before Branon made a nice pickup at third base on a hard ground ball to her left and tossed across the diamond for the game's final out.
