Softball Takes Pair from SUNY Plattsburgh

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. - The Saint Michael's College softball team swept the State University of New York at Plattsburgh, 9-0 in five innings and 7-4, on Wednesday at Cardinal Park.

  • First-year Madi Liimatainen (Turners Falls, Mass./Turners Falls) spun a one-hit shutout in the opener before picking up a save in the nightcap.
  • Senior Brooke Edgerly (Morley, Mich./Morley Stanwood) moved into a tie for third in program history in season runs (29) while climbing into fourth in hits (48), breaking Meg O'Connor's '09 18-year-old mark for hits by a lefty (46). Edgerly also leapfrogged SMC Athletic Hall of Famer Ashley Harkins '09 (28) to take over third in career stolen bases (29) while passing classmate CJ Davidson (Canyon Lake, Calif./Vista Murrieta) (121) and SMC Athletic Hall of Famer Noelle Gill '05 (120) for sixth in hits (123).
  • Davidson passed SMC Athletic Hall of Famer Casey Brooks '07 (67) and Meagan Newland '06 (66) to capture fifth in program history in career RBI (69). She extended her career sac flies record (9) while breaking Kelly Rose Losi's '11 16-year-old season record (5).

  • Liimatainen and first-year Ciara Flaherty (Newington, Conn./East Catholic) slugged consecutive run-scoring doubles to make it 2-0 in the first inning.
  • Booska scored in the second before Owens knocked a two-run single and stole home during a four-run fourth. Edgerly added a squeeze in the frame.
  • First-year Shylee Karenbauer (Chicora, Pa./Butler Area) added an RBI groundout before Edgerly doubled home Underfer in a two-run fifth.
  • In between, Liimatainen set down her first eight hitters, allowing only Isaacs' single through the right side with two out in the third in the opening three innings. She fanned the final batter of the contest to cap the gem.

THE ACTION
  • Davidson's first-inning sac fly and Edgerly's opposite-field inside-the-park home run in the third staked Saint Michael's to a 2-0 lead.
  • Noll came through with a two-out RBI single in the bottom of the third before DeLorenzo knocked a two-out RBI single and Pillus scored on an infield error in the fourth, allowing the Cardinals to take a 3-2 lead.
  • Another Davidson sac fly tied the game in the fifth before Pillus' two-out RBI single gave SUNY Plattsburgh a 4-3 lead in the home half of the sixth.
  • Down to its final two outs, Saint Michael's rallied for four runs in the seventh, as Davidson ripped a two-run single up the middle before junior Abreanna Smith (Whitewright, Texas/Whitewright) added insurance with a two-run double.
  • Liimatainen worked around a leadoff single in the home half to retire the final three Cardinals.
