Softball Downed Twice at Regionally-Ranked Southern New Hampshire

HOOKSETT, N.H. - The Saint Michael's College softball team lost twice in Northeast 10 Conference play to regionally-ranked Southern New Hampshire University, 7-1 and 5-3, on Friday at the SNHU Softball Field. The Penmen were fifth in this week's NCAA East Region poll.

DOUBLEHEADER FACTS
  • Senior Brooke Edgerly (Morley, Mich./Morley Stanwood) became the fourth Purple Knight with 50 hits in a season and now stands third in program history (51), within four of the mark SMC Athletic Hall of Famer Ashley Harkins '09 set in 2009. Edgerly also tied SMC Athletic Hall of Famer Casey Brooks '07 for second in runs (30), behind only the 38 Harkins scored in 2009.

THE ACTION
  • The Penmen scored five unearned runs over the first two innings, with Sousa's two-out, two-run double finishing off a three-run first and Alto's two-out RBI single capping a two-run second.
  • Booska's RBI double plated Liimatainen for the visitors' first run in the fifth.
  • Alto's second RBI knock sparked a two-run sixth.

THE ACTION
  • Sousa's two-out, two-run single finished off a four-run first inning for the Penmen, whose next 21 batters picked up only two hits while being held off the scoreboard again until the sixth.
  • Sophomore Ella Nickerson (South Portland, Maine/South Portland) singled home Branon with two down in the sixth to make it 4-1.
  • Feldman got the run back with a two-out RBI double in the home half.
  • Flaherty singled in Edgerly in the top of the seventh before Branon walked with the bases loaded to cut the deficit to 5-3. With the bases loaded and one down, Roussel returned to the circle to relieve a Southern New Hampshire reliever and induced a game-ending 1-2-3 double play against her only batter.
