Baseball Sweeps Pair of One-Run Decisions From AIC, 4-3 and 1-0

COLCHESTER, Vt. - The Saint Michael's College baseball team swept American International College, 4-3 and 1-0 in seven innings, during a Northeast 10 Conference doubleheader on Friday at Doc Jacobs Field.

DOUBLEHEADER FACTS
  • The Purple Knights tied a school record for conference wins, previously reached in 1993, 2013 and 2024.
  • Saint Michael's defeated AIC at home for the first time since April 7, 2013.
  • Sophomore Jerry Guzman (Valley Cottage, N.Y./Brunswick School) tied a school record with his third save of the season, matching four players. Trevor Allen '19 had been the latest to reach the mark, in 2018.
  • Senior Colin Burke (Amherst, N.H./Souhegan) moved into a tie for second in school annals with his fifth career save, matching Allen. Rob McCarty '11 holds the record with six.
  • Junior Richard Gilboy (South Portland, Maine/South Portland) moved into a tie for eighth in program history in career RBI (67) with Alec Tice '14.
  • Senior Keegan Burke (Amherst, N.H./Souhegan) moved into 12th in program history in career strikeouts (134), passing Rob Hopper '94 (129). He is one short of the top 10.
  • First-year Gavin Nichols (Swanton, Vt./Missisquoi Valley Union) earned his first college win in the nightcap, as he and Guzman combined on the Purple Knights' first shutout since a 2-0 win at Franklin Pierce University on March 30, 2019.
  • The 1-0 win was the Purple and Gold's first since March 25, 2012, at the University of New Haven, and its first at home since April 10, 1999, versus Norwich University. Overall, it was the program's 17th 1-0 win in 114 years of existence.

THE ACTION
  • After a wind-aided single allowed senior Leandro Guevara to reach with two down in the first inning, senior Alex Dye's RBI knock made it 1-0.
  • AIC went ahead 3-0 in the second thanks to Tanous' squeeze and Ramirez's RBI single, but Keegan Burke averted further damage with a nifty backhanded flip to first base for the second out before fanning the final batter.
  • Gilboy's groundout brought home Spagna in the third before Kolifrath followed by sending a 2-2 pitch over the wall in left for a game-tying, two-out, two-run homer.
  • The following frame, Ayala came through with a two-out RBI double, scoring Kinsella with the eventual winning run.
  • Keegan Burke worked out of a two-out jam in the sixth, when AIC had two runners in scoring position, before brother Colin struck out the side in the eighth and left runners at the corners in the ninth.

THE ACTION
  • Graduate student Josh Frometa and junior Aidan Streeter hit back-to-back singles with two down in the second inning before Nichols fanned the final hitter, and the first two reached in the third prior to he and Guzman combined to retire the final 15 batters.
  • In the home half of the fifth, the Purple Knights loaded the bases with one out before Spagna hit an infield grounder with two down that was mishandled, allowing Guzman to score the game's only run.
