WEST HAVEN, Conn. - The Saint Michael's College softball team
(8-26, 3-21 Northeast-10 Conference) saw its losing skid reach 10
games on Wednesday, as the Purple Knights fell at league-leading
University of New Haven in a pair of five inning games, 12-0 and
8-0.
Senior Lindsay Bernard (Scarborough, Maine/Catherine McAuley)
had the lone hit of the twinbill for the Purple Knights, a single
in the fifth inning of game one.
For New Haven (34-4, 22-2 NE-10), ranked 11th in this week's
Division II national poll released earlier today, Breanne Gleason
improved to 29-3 on the season, pitching complete games in both
contests. She struck out nine Purple Knights in the opener while
allowing just Bernard's infield single, and fired a no-hitter with
eight strikeouts in the nightcap, allowing just a pair of walks.
Freshman Stephanie Frank (Essex, Vt./Essex) suffered the
complete-game loss for Saint Michael's in game one, allowing seven
earned runs. Senior Kelly Egan (Milford, Mass./Marian) took the
complete-game loss in game two, also allowing seven earned runs.
The Chargers did all of their scoring in the first three innings
of both contests. In the opener, New Haven scored three runs in the
first inning, four more in the second frame, and five runs in the
third inning to race out to a 12-0 advantage. In game two, the
Chargers scored a pair of runs in both the first and second
innings, and doubled their lead with four runs in the third frame
to complete the scoring.
Saint Michael's completes its season with three straight days of
home doubleheaders, starting with Friday's 3:30 p.m. twinbill with
Southern New Hampshire University.
