SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. – The Saint Michael's College men's hockey team (6-9-1, 4-7-1 ECAC East) couldn't recover from Babson's four third-period goals as the Purple Knights fell 9-4 at Cairns Arena on Friday. The Purple Knights stayed alive through two periods, trailing 3-2, but a quintuplet of unanswered goals was the killing blow that marked the first time Saint Michael's has allowed nine goals since a 12-2 loss to Middlebury on Feb. 6, 2009.
For Babson, senior Jason Schneider (Littleton, Mass./Lawrence Academy) had a hat trick and then some, adding two assists to a dominant night on the ice. For Saint Michael's, junior Reave MacKinnon (Winnipeg, Manitoba/Winnipeg Saints) had a goal and an assist, and freshmen Ryan MacDonald (Darien, Conn./Berkshire School) and Sam Torney (Shelburne, Vt./Berkshire School) tallied their first collegiate goals.
The Beavers took an early lead with sophomore Matt Leer (Edina, Minn./North Iowa Outlaws) flicking in a rebound past Saint Michael's sophomore goalie Mike Dizgun (Kirkland, Quebec/OCN Blizzard), who had his head on a swivel but couldn't find the loose puck. The Purple Knights answered back in the 12th minute when MacKinnon flushed a wrister off of senior Nick Sheehan's (Potsdam, N.Y./Cornwall Colts) rebound for his team-best 12th goal of the year. Leer had one more in him before the period ended, however, as he connected to put Babson up 2-1 after one period.
Senior Fran Briand (South Burlington, Vt./Loomis Chaffee School) got the Purple Knights off on the right foot in the second period, finishing a well-executed 2-on-1 breakaway with sophomore Michael Jangro (Reading, Mass./Valley Warriors). Schneider and sophomore Ryan Smith (Lynnfield, Mass./Boston Bulldogs) kept the Babson lead alive with back-to-back goals just over a minute apart. Saint Michael's would not go quietly, however, thanks to MacDonald's devastating slapshot that split the defenders with such velocity that it sent Babson junior goalie Andrew Peabody's (Marblehead, Mass./St. Paul's School) water bottle flying off the back of the net.
The Beavers would then proceed to catch fire, rattling off five unanswered goals in a span of 14 minutes. Schneider picked up goals two and three, while senior Terry Woods (Duxbury, Mass./Andover Academy) netted his first goal of the year.
Dizgun made 33 saves while facing the Babson assault, and Peabody stopped 24-of-28 shots faced.
The Purple Knights will look to bounce back on Saturday when they host UMass Boston at 3 p.m.
