SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. – The Saint Michael's College men's hockey team (5-6-0, 3-4-0 ECAC East) suffered a hard fought 6-5 loss to nationally-ranked Bowdoin College in a conference game that featured five lead changes at Cairns Arena on Saturday. The Purple Knights held leads in the first and third periods, but the Polar Bears exploded for three goals in a span of 40 seconds to secure the win late in the final frame.

Both teams came storming out of the gate, combining for three goals scored before either goalie made a save. The Polar Bears struck first, with sophomore Robert Toczylowski (Reading, Mass./Proctor Academy) crashing the left side of the net for a goal just 59 seconds after the opening faceoff. Saint Michael's freshman Kevin Lampron (Dorchester, Mass./Bridgewater Bandits) answered immediately after senior Alex Higgins (Phoenix, Ariz./Kent School) won the ensuing faceoff and dumped the puck, allowing Lampron to net his first career goal. Sophomore Michael Jangro (Reading, Mass./Valley Warriors) broke the tie in the 17th minute to put Saint Michael's up 2-1 after one period.

The Polar Bears took control in the second period, taking advantage of six Purple Knight penalties. Sophomore Daniel Weiniger (Warren, N.J./Phillips Exeter) knotted things up with a power play goal six minutes into the second frame, and Toczylowski struck again with a one-man advantage to reclaim the lead entering the third period.

Junior Reave MacKinnon

The Purple Knights built a rally around junior Reave MacKinnon's (Winnipeg, Manitoba/Winnipeg Saints) first goal of the game. Sophomore Morgan Bell (Revelstoke, B.C./Saint Albert Saints) gathered the puck behind his own net and surveyed the ice before slashing up past the blue line. Bell passed to senior Glenn Belmore (Cornwall, Ontario/Univ. of Maine), who skated through two defenders of the left wing and fired a shot. MacKinnon pounced on the rebound to tie the game at 3-all. Just over a minute later, sophomore Dan Evarts (Hinesburg, Vt./Green Mountain Glades) let loose with a blazing slap shot above the right circle that threaded the defense to give Saint Michael's a 4-3 lead.

Rather than fold after surrendering the lead, the Polar Bears caught fire and rattled off three goals in lighting-quick fashion. Weiniger started the surge with a power-play goal on a slap shot from just inside the blue line that hit a defender and trickled over the goal line. Sixteen seconds later, freshman Kyle Lockwood (Ridgefield, Conn./Berkshire School) rattled home a goal to reclaim the lead. Freshman Jay Livermore (Wilbraham, Mass./Millbrook School) capped the offensive onslaught win the game-winner, a one-timer off a behind-the-net pass from Toczylowski.

MacKinnon kept the Saint Michael's hopes alive, bringing the Purple Knights back within one with his second goal of the night with just over seven minutes remaining. The junior forward skated down the left wing, battling for the puck before contact forced him to the ground. MacKinnon stood up and threw his arms in the air in frustration at the lack of the call, only to be left all alone just outside the crease and in perfect position to flush a well-placed pass from junior Brady Earle (Columbia, Md./The Gunnery School). It would not be enough, however, as Bowdoin held on for the 6-5 win.

Sophomore goalie Mike Dizgun (Kirkland, Quebec/OCN Blizzard) made a season-high 41 saves, including 18 in the second period. For Bowdoin, freshman Steve Messina (Newton, N.J./Hill School) remained unbeaten on the season while stopping 26 shots.

The Purple Knights hit the road for a four-game road trip, beginning at Northeast-10 Conference rival Saint Anselm on Friday at 7 p.m.
