FOXBORO, Mass. - The Saint Michael's College men's ice hockey team (9-13-1, 5-0-0 Northeast-10 Conference) completed the first perfect NE-10 regular season in program history on Tuesday evening with a 6-3 win versus Stonehill College at the Foxboro Sports Center.
Saint Michael's, who had already clinched the NE-10 regular-season title prior to facing Stonehill, enters the NE-10 Tournament as the top seed, and receives a Quarterfinal Round bye. The Purple Knights, who last won the NE-10 regular-season title in 2008, will host an NE-10 Semifinal game on Wednesday, March 2 at 7 p.m. against an opponent yet to be determined.
In Tuesday's win, senior Nick Sheehan (Potsdam, N.Y./Cornwall Colts) tallied two goals and an assist, while freshman Sam Torney (Shelburne, Vt./Berkshire Bandits) added a goal and an assist. Sophomores Josh Geary (Wellesley, Mass./Phillips Andover Academy), Michael Jangro (Reading, Mass./Valley Warriors) and Dan Pelletier (Sutton, Mass./South Kent School) also scored a goal apiece for the Purple Knights, while junior Brady Earle (Columbia, Md./The Gunnery School) handed out three assists. Sophomore Mike Dizgun (Kirkland, Quebec/OCN Blizzard) stopped 10 shots in two periods to earn the win, while senior Brian McWade (Franklin, Mass./Xaverian Brothers) recorded 15 third-period saves in his season debut.
For Stonehill (5-15-1), Christopher Gorovitz, Pat Greene and Bryan Rooney each scored a goal, while Kevin Diamond and Derek Chapdelaine combined to save 36 shots.
Saint Michael's led 4-0 after one period, as the Purple Knights tallied four even-strength goals in the first 9:37 of the game. Saint Michael's increased its advantage to 5-0 just 1:22 into the second period, before Rooney got the Skyhawks on the scoreboard later in the second period with a penalty shot goal.
Sheehan's second goal of the game 1:18 into the third period pushed Saint Michael's lead to 6-1, and Stonehill completed the scoring with two power play goals 47 seconds apart midway through the final frame.
Saint Michael's finished with a 42-28 edge in shots on goal, including 27-11 in the first two periods.
The Purple Knights will be home for the rest of the season, and return to action on Friday with a 7 p.m. contest versus ECAC East rival Tufts University at Cairns Arena in South Burlington. Saint Michael's final game before the NE-10 Tournament is on Saturday against Connecticut College at 4 p.m.
