KEENE, N.H. - The Saint Michael's College women's lacrosse team
opened the 2011 season on Saturday with a 15-5 loss at Keene State
College.
Junior Eliza Scoba (Franklin, Mass./Franklin)
scored two goals, and assisted on the other three Purple Knight
tallies, in the loss. Sophomore Kait Newdorf (Auburn,
N.H./Manchester Memorial) also scored two goals for Saint
Michael's, while junior Spenser Wolfe (West Newbury,
Mass./The Governor's Academy) added a goal for the
visitors. Junior Sandy Palumbo (Guilford,
Conn./Guilford) turned aside 16 shots.
For Keene, Lauren Sawyer netted three goals and
two assists, Nicole Curry chipped in with three
goals and a helper, and Jamie Albert also scored
three goals. Ashley Borjeson and Lauren
Brown chipped in with two goals apiece off the bench,
while Erin Taylor recorded eight saves
to earn the season-opening victory for the Owls.
Keene raced out to a 4-0 lead less than five minutes into the
contest, but Saint Michael's quickly recovered, as the Purple
Knights scored three unanswered goals to pull to within 4-3 10:09
into the game. Saint Michael's couldn't pull even with the Owls,
however, over the final 20 minutes of the first half, and Keene
held a 7-5 advantage at intermission.
The second half was all Keene, as the hosts outscored Saint
Michael's 8-0 after halftime. The Owls held a commanding 18-4
advantage in shots in the second period, and a 16-6 edge in ground
balls, to hold off any attempts at a Purple Knights' comeback.
Saint Michael's returns to action on Tuesday, as the Purple
Knights open Northeast-10 Conference play with a 4 p.m. contest at
Stonehill College.
