COLCHESTER, Vt. – The Saint Michael's College women's lacrosse team (2-6, 1-3 Northeast-10 Conference) went on an offensive tear and earned the first NE-10 win for head coach Ashley Hughes by way of a 17-7 rout of Southern Connecticut State University at Duffy Field on Saturday. The Purple Knights set season bests for goals scored and goals allowed in the win, and 10 Purple Knights scored a goal in the contest with five recording multiple goals, including three apiece for junior Eliza Scoba (Franklin, Mass./Franklin) and sophomore Caitlin Mahoney (Cohasset, Mass./Cohasset).
Scoba added five assists on the day for a career-best eight points, and senior Sarah Gilroy (Hopkinton, N.H./Hopkinton) had two goals and an assist. Also scoring twice were junior Spencer Wolfe (West Newbury, Mass./The Governor's Academy) and freshman Crystal King (South Burlington, Vt./South Burlington). Seniors Joan Colloton (Albany, N.Y./Academy of the Holy Names) and Elizabeth Siekman (Cheshire, Conn./Cheshire) and freshmen Caroline Casper (Norfolk, Mass./Thayer Academy), Alex Coleman (Boxford, Mass./Masconomet Regional) and Claire Martin (Mattapoisett, Mass./Bishop Stang) all scored once with Coleman recording her first collegiate goal.
For the Owls (0-7, 0-5 NE-10), sophomore Jessica Shaw (Beverly, Mass./Beverly) had a game-high four goals, and sophomore goalie Colleen Gore (Southington, Conn./Southington) made eight saves while taking the loss in net.
The Purple Knights raced out to a 6-0 lead in the first 6:30 of play and stretched their lead to 10-2 at halftime. Southern Connecticut could not muster a rally the rest of the game, as Saint Michael's battled between nine- and 10-goal leads throughout the second half. Saint Michael's junior goalie Sandy Palumbo (Guilford, Conn./Guilford) kept the Owls at bay with nine saves in just under 44 minutes of play, and senior goalie Meghan McLaughlin (Cape Elizabeth, Maine/Cape Elizabeth) made a save in relief in her first appearance of the year.
Saint Michael's hits the road again on Wednesday for a conference game at Bentley at 7 p.m.
