WEST HAVEN, Conn. - The Saint Michael's College women's lacrosse team (2-12, 1-9 Northeast-10 Conference) suffered its sixth straight loss on Saturday, 16-2, at 11th-ranked University of New Haven.
For New Haven (9-6, 7-3 NE-10), Alexis Gabbe recorded four goals and one assist, while Natalie Lieberman chipped in with three goals and one assist. Sarah Magnone netted three goals, Kristina Curry and Nicole McKee tallied two goals apiece, and Maureen Spellman turned aside six shots.
For Saint Michael's, seniors Sarah Gilroy (Hopkinton, N.H./Hopkinton) and Elizabeth Siekman (Cheshire, Conn./Cheshire) each scored a goal. Junior Sandy Palumbo (Guilford, Conn./Guilford) stopped 12 shots in the loss, while senior Joan Colloton (Albany, N.Y./Academy of the Holy Names) and junior Eliza Scoba (Franklin, Mass./Franklin) each saw their 11-game goal-scoring streaks come to an end. The loss was Saint Michael's third to a nationally-ranked conference opponent in the last eight days.
Saint Michael's fell behind early, as the host Chargers scored two goals in the first 1:52 of action, and six goals in the opening 13:08 of play. New Haven increased its advantage to 9-0 at halftime, as the Chargers outshot the Purple Knights 20-9 in the period, while Saint Michael's committed 10 turnovers in the first half.
Gilroy got Saint Michael's on the scoreboard 1:23 into the second half, pulling the Purple Knights to within 9-1, but New Haven scored the next seven goals in a 7:11 span to seal the win. Siekman's unassisted score with 6:15 to go completed the scoring.
Saint Michael's closes out the season with two home games, returning to action on Tuesday with a 4 p.m. contest versus Southern New Hampshire University on Duffy Field at Doc Jacobs Complex.
