WORCESTER, Mass. – The Saint Michael's College women's lacrosse team (2-8 overall, 1-5 Northeast-10 Conference) dropped a 14-6 decision to Assumption on Saturday. The Greyhounds used a 10-goal second-half charge to turn a close 4-3 halftime score into a commanding win.
For Assumption, five players had multiple-goal performances: senior Erin Theriault (Feeding Hills, Mass.), sophomores Steph O'Rourke (Amherst, N.H.), Michelle Santo (Holliston, Mass.) and Caitlin White (Bethany, Conn.) and freshman Mary Guinee (Topsfield, Mass.). Freshman goalie Michelle Monahan (Deer Park, N.Y.) made 11 saves in net in the win.
For Saint Michael's, senior Elizabeth Siekman (Cheshire, Conn./Cheshire) scored a team-best two goals, and sophomore goalie Sandy Palumbo (Guilford, Conn./Guilford) collected a game-high six ground balls while making 14 saves.
The Greyhounds worked a 4-1 lead in the first 25 minutes of action, but junior Eliza Scoba (Franklin, Mass./Franklin) and Siekman netted goals within a minute of each other to make it 4-3 at halftime. Assumption stormed out of the gates in the second half and quickly piled on four goals to make it 8-3 before Saint Michael's freshman Beth Cusimano (Essex Junction, Vt./Essex) tallied her first collegiate goal with 12:32 remaining to disrupt the Greyhounds' momentum. Assumption quickly resumed its onslaught and earned six more goals before the period ended to climb above the .500 mark on the year.
Saint Michael's returns home on Tuesday for a 4 p.m. contest against conference-rival Saint Anselm.
