COLCHESTER, Vt. - Senior Kathryn Nelson (Shrewsbury, Mass./Shrewsbury) scored 31 seconds into overtime, lifting Stonehill College past the Saint Michael's College field hockey team, 2-1, on Saturday at Duffy Field, ending the Purple Knights' upset bid over one of last year's NCAA Tournament Final Four qualifiers. Saint Michael's fell to 2-8 in the non-conference game, which kicked off an Alumni Weekend quadrupleheader. The Skyhawks are 4-5.

Freshman Hannah Beardsley (Essex, Mass./Manchester Essex Regional) scored her first collegiate tally for the hosts, knotting the game in the 52nd minute, while classmate Sarah Healey (Canton, Mass./Canton) made six saves during the second half and overtime but absorbed the loss. Freshman Jackie Chisholm (New Braintree, Mass./Quabbin Regional) drew the start, collecting four saves, as the Purple Knights started a freshman in net for the first time since Oct. 5, 1995.

Sophomore Devin Ingersoll (Londonderry, N.H./Londonderry) tallied Stonehill's first marker, making it 1-0 in the eighth minute, while freshman Elizabeth Genovese (Street, Md./North Harford) had one save.

Stonehill tallied the lone goal of the game on the initial shot by either team, with Ingersoll converting on a direct corner at 7:43. Freshman Cassaundra Davis (Newburyport, Mass./Newburyport) looked to knot the game for the Purple Knights in the 14th minute, but her redirection of a teammate's pass just missed the post.

Davis, who played a role in the past five goals for Saint Michael's, had a statistically uncredited hand in Beardsley's equalizer, as her 52nd-minute shot was blocked before Beardsley pounced on the rebound and stuffed home her first tally at 51:18. Stonehill took the final six shots of the game, with Healey saving three, before Nelson netted the winner on the first shot of overtime.

Saint Michael's returns to action next Saturday for a Northeast-10 Conference contest at 2010 NCAA Tournament qualifier American International College at 1 p.m.
