Men's ice hockey falls to Southern Maine, 4-3

GORHAM, Maine - The Saint Michael's College men's ice hockey team lost to the University of Southern Maine, 4-3, on Saturday afternoon at USM Ice Arena in Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) East action. The Purple Knights fall to 0-3 overall and league play after their second one-goal loss of the weekend, while the Huskies move to 2-2 and 2-2.

Seniors Kevin Lampron (Boston, Mass./Bridgewater Bandits) and Sam Torney (Shelburne, Vt./Bridgewater Bandits) each scored while first-year Josh Dickman (Kapaa, Hawaii/Saint Paul's School) tallied his first college marker. Juniors AJ Pieprzak (Barrie, Ontario/Ridley College) and Jeremy Wong (Montreal, Quebec/Tilton School) and sophomore Brodie McCusker (Canaan, N.H./Saint Paul's School) each dished out an assist. Sophomore goaltender Michael Comitini (Hudson, Quebec/Cornwall Colts) made a career-high 28 saves.

Huskie junior Ryan Seward (Port Jefferson, N.Y./New York Bobcats) and first-year Kelby Lorenz (Mississauga, Ontario/Toronto Lakeshore Patriots) each had a goal and an assist while sophomore Pier-Michel Lapointe (Saint Georges, Quebec/Hebron Academy) and first-year Todd Bannerman (Georgetown, Ontario/Cambridge Winter Hawks) also scored a goal each. Junior Lorne Miller (Montreal, Quebec/Nepean Raiders), sophomores Zach Dymock (Dutton, Ontario/National Sports Academy), Bob Ganley (Weymouth, Mass./Bridgton Academy) and Alex Pompeo (Hingham, Mass./Bridgton Academy), and first-year Sam Blanchet (Laurier-Station, Quebec/North Bay Trappers) also contributed with assists. Sophomore goalie Josh Hillegas (Middleton, Wis./New England Huskies) turned away 17 shots.

The teams traded goals in the first period as Torney gave the Purple Knights a 1-0 lead at 9:07. Lorenz tied the game 34 seconds later. Lampron lit the lamp at 12:19 to give his team the lead again. However, Seward tied the game with 29 seconds left in the frame while his team was on the power play. Lapointe gave his team the lead 9:53 into the second frame. Bannerman added an insurance goal for the Huskies 3:32 into the third period. While hit team played with the goalie pulled, Dickman scored a power-play goal with 57 seconds remaining in the game to cut the deficit to one. However, the Purple Knights were unable to score the equalizing goal.

Saint Michael's hosts New England College next Friday for a 7 p.m. contest at Cairns Arena. The Pilgrims are receiving votes toward the U.S. College Hockey Online (USCHO) Division III national poll.
