Vlasich Strikes for Overtime Winner, Purple Knights Stun Perennial Power Southern New Hampshire

Box Score

COLCHESTER, Vt. - Senior Matt Vlasich (East Kingston, N.H./Exeter/Saint Anselm) completed his career by scoring with 2:16 left in the second overtime to help the Saint Michael's College men's soccer team stun perennial power Southern New Hampshire University, 2-1, on Friday afternoon at Duffy Field on Senior Day.

The Purple Knights finished the season 5-10-1 overall and 3-10 in the Northeast-10 Conference, posting a 3-0-1 mark in overtime games, while the Penmen are 11-3-2 and 8-3-2. Southern New Hampshire, which received votes toward the latest United Soccer Coaches national poll while holding down the fifth spot in the East Region, qualified for the last nine NCAA Tournaments and won four of the last five NE10 Championships. Saint Michael's defeated Southern New Hampshire for the first time since Oct. 12, 2005, claiming its third win in a series that began in 1984.

Vlasich, who finished off a five-year college career that began with a year at Saint Anselm College - located in Manchester, N.H., down the road from Southern New Hampshire - and included missing all of the 2016 season due to injury, netted his second career game-winner, the first coming on another Senior Day on Oct. 31, 2014. Senior back Adrián Díaz (Santiago de Compostela, Spain/Vermont Academy) played a hand in both goals, depositing the tying 58th-minute strike before assisting Vlasich's winner. He led the team with career highs of five goals and 13 points as a senior. In his second start of the season, senior Daniel du Feu (Miami, Fla./Palmer Trinity School) notched nine saves, as the hosts were only outshot 23-17 while being outgained 9-8 on corner kicks.

Junior Alex Satrustegui scored for Southern New Hampshire, which had its six-game unbeaten streak come to an end, while classmate Daniel Milton notched five stops.

In the second overtime, Díaz nearly ended the game 20 seconds in but Milton made a diving stop by the left post on a shot that had been touched by a defender's foot. Du Feu saved a long attempt by first-year Tom Marriott in the 103rd minute, and Díaz's corner kick entry skimmed off of senior back Daniel Castaño's (Miami, Fla./Doral Academy Charter School) head and drifted wide right during the 104th minute. During the 108th minute, Vlasich struck for the winner just two minutes after entering as a sub, as Díaz slipped a pass from the center of the field to the right, and Vlasich curled a shot to the right side of the net.

Sophomore Romain Daniellou took a shot that sailed toward the crossbar just three minutes into the game, but du Feu denied the attempt by making a two-handed jumping save. During the sixth minute, senior Jackson Steele (Swampscott, Mass./Cushing Academy) dribbled down the left side and sailed a shot toward the left post, causing Milton to jump and punch the ball away. Satrustegui sent a point-blank shot at an oncoming du Feu at 13:22 near the right side of the box. Junior Jonathan Cruickshank sent the rebound back toward a vacated net, but sophomore back Brady Channell (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Plattsburgh) cleared the ball off the goal line near the right post. Amid a 28th-minute corner set, Díaz found the head of unmarked junior Cole McIntire (Eliot, Maine/Marshwood), who redirected a shot into the left side netting.

The Penmen struck 54 seconds after halftime, as first-year Daniel Jones dribbled down the left side and sent a cross through the defense to an unmarked Satrustegui, who drilled a shot into the right side of the goal. Milton slid off his line to stop Channell's bid less than a minute later, and du Feu kept it 1-0 by turning away Satrustegui's 48th-minute header and point-blank 54th-minute rip near the right post. Saint Michael's knotted the game soon thereafter, as sophomore Jake Bannon (Clifton, Va./Paul VI Catholic) fought for a ball on the left end line and sent a cross to the right side for Díaz, who tallied at 57:50. Southern New Hampshire had two golden opportunities to win in the waning moments of regulation, with Satrustegui first being robbed by a diving du Feu at 88:46 before narrowly missing sending home a cross.

Saint Michael's collected four corner kicks in the opening 4:35 of the first overtime period, but both shots in that time were saved by Milton, including Channell's bid from just inside the box at 93:34 that the keeper jumped to punch away. Cruickshank almost ended the game in the 96th minute but slipped a shot narrowly wide of the left post, and du Feu stopped sophomore Louka Masset's header off of a corner entry with 15 seconds to go, forcing another extra stanza.

Prior to their final college contest, seven seniors were honored: Castaño, Díaz, du Feu, Steele, Vlasich, Peter Kendall (Springfield, Vt./Springfield) and Director of Soccer Operations Dante DiGioia (Worcester, Mass.).
