COLCHESTER, Vt. - Despite a fast start during the opening set, the Saint Michael's College women's volleyball team lost to regionally-ranked Adelphi University, 3-0 (25-22, 25-15, 25-14), on Friday evening in the Ross Sports Center during Northeast-10 Conference play. The Panthers were eighth in the latest NCAA East Region poll.

THE ACTION

• Scott's ace gave Saint Michael's a 3-0 lead in the opening set, and a tying three-point counter by Adelphi was met by a 10-2 run from the hosts, keyed by two Gallagher kills and an ace by senior Anna Lonczak (Pine Plains, N.Y./Stissing Mountain), putting the Purple Knights up 13-5. Scott's kill extended the advantage to 18-8, and Gallagher's kill had the end within sight at 22-17. However, Mandreja's two kills bolstered an 8-0 run that ended the set, capping a larger 17-4 run.
• Senior Allie Statile (Simsbury, Conn./Simsbury) had a kill and an ace while combining with Gallagher on a block as the teams split the opening six points of set No. 2, but McKenzie posted a pair of blocks in a 6-0 run that gave Adelphi a 9-3 lead. The Purple Knights trailed only 14-8 following a Panther service error, but Mandreja's kill finished off an 8-3 run that put the lead at 11, and the hosts never again trailed by fewer than nine points.
• The teams played through two ties while neither led by more than three points during the early stages of the third set, until McKenzie had a kill and a block in a 5-0 run that snapped a 7-7 tie. Mandreja later dropped an ace during a 4-0 stretch that pushed the lead to 19-10, the beginning of a 9-3 run.
