Women's Basketball Loses 69-64 Overtime Decision Against Saint Rose

COLCHESTER, Vt. - The Saint Michael's College women's basketball team opened Northeast-10 Conference play with a 69-64 overtime loss to The College of Saint Rose on Wednesday in the Ross Sports Center.

THE ACTION

  • Sanchez scored five points during a 9-0 run that gave Saint Rose a 9-2 lead by 5:15 of the first quarter, but the Purple Knights later netted nine straight points of their own to push in front, 16-14. Emma MacDonough (2:05) and Brophy (1:25) canned three-pointers 40 seconds apart before Kapral dropped in a go-ahead lay-up 1:03 into the second period to cap the run.
  • The teams traded three leads from there, with the visitors going ahead 24-21 on first-year Kaelah Carter's three from the sideline at 1:40. Slaven's bucket in the lane in the waning seconds brought Saint Michael's within 26-23 at halftime.
  • In the third quarter, Saint Rose extended its lead to as much as 42-36 on senior Makaela Johnson's put-back at 23 seconds.
  • Saint Michael's countered with a 13-6 run, as Emma MacDonough and Slaven both netted five points before Brophy hit the go-ahead triple with 5:29 left in the fourth quarter. That was the first of five lead swings in a matter of 2:08 before Slaven's trey at 2:42 had the hosts up 57-53.
  • Hunt hit the tying jumper with 51 seconds to go, and both teams had a pair of empty ensuing possessions before the game extended to overtime.
  • In the extra session, Sanchez scored the first five points, giving the visitors a 62-57 edge on a three at 3:40, before Emma MacDonough netted five points in a 7-0 response.
  • After Blasetti hit tying free throws with 1:05 left, a turnover led to Sanchez coming up with the go-ahead lay-in at 53 ticks. Now down three following a Blasetti freebie at seven seconds, the Purple Knights turned the ball over, leading to Blasetti's clinching basket with two seconds left.
