COLCHESTER, Vt. - The Saint Michael's College women's basketball team lost to Southern Connecticut State University, 67-53 in overtime, on Monday evening in the Ross Sports Center during Northeast-10 Conference play.

GAME FACTS

  • The Purple Knights held a 45-43 edge on the glass, including 13-8 in offensive rebounding. Despite committing one more turnover (13) than the Owls (12), the Purple and Gold converted that into a 20-8 lead in points off of giveaways.
  • Saint Michael's played for the fourth time in seven days, part of an 18-day stretch that features eight contests.
  • The home team had won the last 11 meetings, with Saint Michael's winning the prior seven in the Ross Sports Center.

THE ACTION

  • Junior Kelly Laggis' (Fairfield, Vt./BFA-Saint Albans) lay-up capped a 7-0 run that gave Saint Michael's a 7-2 edge by 7:57 of the first quarter, and a 10-3 run, keyed by five Anderson points, made it 19-10 at 2:38.
  • Southern Connecticut State responded with the next 12 points, including six by Kellner and five from Amalbert, before senior Delaney Connors' jumper at 4:22 of the second period concluded an 18-4 stretch. The Owls led 28-23.
  • Back-to-back Brophy baskets kickstarted a go-ahead 6-0 run, as the teams swapped the lead four times in the final 2:12. Fressle's lay-up in the waning seconds sent the visitors into halftime with a 33-32 edge.
  • The Owls twice led by five points in the third period, but Slaven, Brophy and Anderson canned threes during a 9-0 run to give Saint Michael's a 43-39 lead at 2:55.
  • That was the largest lead for either team until overtime, as the Purple Knights led 53-49 at 4:24 of the fourth quarter when Slaven drained another triple. However, in a period that featured 14 points between the teams, Connors put home a jumper at 2:13 before Fressle's lay-in tied the game with 1:42 left in regulation.
  • Both teams missed two shots down the stretch, including as Slaven snared a board with 0.3 seconds to go, but the Purple Knights were unable to fire off a winning attempt after calling a timeout.
  • Southern Connecticut State scored all 14 points of the overtime session, with Amalbert and Kellner knocking down treys on their team's first two possessions during the opening minute.
