Women's Ice Hockey Downed by Franklin Pierce, 1-0, in NEWHA Opener

SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. - The Saint Michael's College women's ice hockey team opened New England Women's Hockey Alliance play with a 1-0 loss to Franklin Pierce University on Friday evening in Cairns Arena. The teams complete a two-game weekend series on Saturday.

  • Lavender posted her seventh career 40-save outing, nearly singlehandedly offsetting the Purple Knights being outshot 41-26.
THE ACTION
  • The teams went scoreless on five first-period power plays, as the Ravens held a 14-10 lead in shots.
  • The visitors put together a 15-13 shots edge in the second frame, nearly breaking through in the late stages when Kawa was sent in alone on Lavender, who made a shoulder save at 14:10.
  • Junior Angelina Ruiz (Independence, Minn./Gentry Academy) saw her point-blank power-play bid from the slot smothered by Hertl at 18:18.
  • Lavender used her paddle to deny graduate student Jenna Hartung of an otherwise open net at 3:20 of the third period.
  • Kawa tallied the game's lone goal with 15:07 gone, pushing home a rebound of sophomore Maggie Korneta's saved shot from the right point.
  • Saint Michael's was unable to put another shot on net or pull Lavender for an extra skater, being called for a penalty with 19 seconds to go.
