Field Hockey Downed by No. 8 Assumption, 4-3, in Overtime

COLCHESTER, Vt. - Graduate student Lily Daly scored with 3:03 remaining in the first overtime as the Saint Michael's College field hockey team lost to No. 8 Assumption University, 4-3, on Wednesday afternoon during Northeast-10 Conference play on Duffy Field. The Greyhounds, whose national ranking is according to the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA), are among five teams under consideration in this week's NCAA East Region rankings.

GAME FACTS
  • Loughlin became just the second Purple Knight among the top 10 in career goals, assists and points in program history, joining Seanna Poelaert '00. Loughlin is sixth in points (83), passing Jilby Danis '04 (82); seventh in goals (33); and eighth in assists (17), passing three Purple Knights.
  • With her performance on Wednesday, Loughlin moved into a tie for eighth in program history in season goals (14) while taking over 10th in points (34). In her last five games, Loughlin eight goals and two assists.
  • Shapiro has seven defensive saves this season, the most by a Purple Knight since Hannah Beardsley '15 (8) and Shannon Rice '15 (7) in 2014.
THE ACTION
  • Murray netted the opening marker after 4:36 of play, maneuvering through the defense before driving a backhanded shot into the lower left corner from the edge of the circle.
  • The Purple Knights evened the score only 35 seconds later, with Fenton finding the lower right side of the net from the perimeter during a corner set.
  • At 6:15 of the opening frame, Murray backed away from pressure near the left post and drilled a low shot into the far corner.
  • Watt swatted away junior Mia Salah's backhanded bid from close range with her left blocker at 8:30 to keep it 2-1.
  • Watt stopped first-year Marta Brzoska's point-blank shot in the 38th minute before Shapiro also helped maintain the one-goal deficit by holding the goal line to stop Salah's follow-up bid.
  • Seconds after Loughlin's shot during a corner sequence was batted down by Gillette, Loughlin tied the game in the 42nd minute when she grabbed the rebound of her initial shot in an ensuing corner set that was blocked.
  • Watt made a blocker stop of Daly while sliding near the left post in the 43rd minute.
  • At 53:27, Daly batted in Murray's pass, which was knocked into the air by a Purple Knight.
  • However, Saint Michael's drew even on a similar play only 32 seconds later, as Loughlin's pass from the edge of the circle was tipped into the air by a Greyhound and batted home by Cathcart.
  • Shapiro aided the defensive effort with another defensive save in the 57th minute, ensuring overtime.
  • Watt denied Murray's bid in the opening minute of the extra session before Daly broke through in the 67th minute, pushing home junior Caroline McSweeney's pass toward the left post.
