Kosiba's First-Half Strike Fells Regionally-Ranked Southern New Hampshire, 1-0

COLCHESTER, Vt. - Sophomore Faith Kosiba (Dunstable, Mass./Groton-Dunstable Regional) scored in the 45th minute as the Saint Michael's College women's soccer team downed regionally-ranked Southern New Hampshire University, 1-0, on Tuesday during a Northeast-10 Conference affair at Duffy Field. The Penmen, who qualified for the 2022 NCAA Tournament, were seventh in this week's United Soccer Coaches East Region poll.

GAME FACTS
  • Saint Michael's defeated the Penmen for the first time since Oct. 15, 2014. By tying Southern New Hampshire last year, the Purple Knights took points from the Penmen in consecutive games for the first time since a four-game winning streak between 1999 and 2002.
  • Kosiba scored the game-winning goal for the second straight outing.
  • The Purple Knights played their fourth straight NE10 contest against a team at least regionally ranked, with two nationally-ranked foes in that stretch.
  • Southern New Hampshire held edges of 9-7 in shots and 5-3 in corner kicks.
THE ACTION
  • Junior Emilia McGiffert (Duluth, Minn./Marshall School/Minnesota Duluth) harassed sophomore Georgia Greene's point-blank shot in the third minute, slowing it down for Anastopoulos to make a save at the right post.
  • The Purple Knights put together an odd-woman rush in the 11th minute that nearly led to a goal, as senior back Sam Page (Merrimack, N.H./Merrimack) led the breakout before sophomore Bella DelVecchio (Saugus, Mass./Bishop Fenwick) one-touched her cross into Keith's hands above her head.
  • Sophomore Carly Schofield had a good look from the center of the box in the 29th minute but pushed her shot wide left.
  • In the 32nd minute, Schofield got behind the defense and slipped a shot beyond a sliding Anastopoulos that was ticketed for the lower right corner, but first-year back Bridget McLoughlin (Latham, N.Y./Shaker) cleared the ball just short of the goal line.
  • With 34.7 seconds to go in the opening half, Kosiba's left-footed blast from 25 yards found the upper right corner after she had initially tipped away a 50/50 ball following first-year Bridget Hanley's (Mansfield, Mass./Mansfield) pass.
  • Sophomore Imogen Noon lofted a ball high in the air looking for a teammate at the back post in the 66th minute that drifted off of the crossbar and over.
  • DelVecchio made a nice move on a defender to clear space for a shot in the 70th minute, but Keith tipped the bid from distance off the crossbar.
  • Kosiba nearly added an equalizer in the 83rd minute, but her shot was denied by Keith, who covered under pressure from junior Nathalie Larssen (Gothenburg, Sweden/Sjölins Gymnasium/Morningside).
  • Anastopoulos intercepted junior Payton O'Donnell's 84th-minute cross for the Penmen's final threat, as Saint Michael's salted away the waning minutes.
