Women's Basketball Opens Season with 68-54 Loss to Saint Anselm

COLCHESTER, Vt. - The Saint Michael's College women's basketball team opened the season with a 68-54 loss to Northeast-10 Conference foe Saint Anselm College on Wednesday evening in the Ross Sports Center.

  • Neither team led by more than three points in the opening six minutes of the contest, and Blake's lay-up at 3:35 of the first quarter had her team within 9-6.
  • Saint Anselm slowly pulled away thanks to an 18-5 run. Forbes scored eight points in that time, while sophomore Harmony Marquez had six.
  • Furch's two free throws with 32 seconds left in the second quarter had the Purple Knights down 32-20 before junior Marta Pons Gomez hit a corner three at the buzzer, sparking a 17-3 run that spanned halftime.
  • The Hawks extended their lead to a game-high 27 (62-35) on another Gomez triple in the waning seconds of the third stanza.
  • Saint Michael's outscored the visitors in the fourth quarter, 19-6, behind 4-of-5 three-point shooting.
