Women's Ice Hockey Downed by Sacred Heart, 5-1, to Finish NEWHA Weekend

SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. - The Saint Michael's College women's ice hockey team lost to Sacred Heart University, 5-1, to finish a New England Women's Hockey Alliance (NEWHA) weekend set on Saturday afternoon at Cairns Arena. Senior Mikaela Langbacka (Lorton, Va./Washington Pride) scored her team-leading fourth goal of the season for the Purple Knights in the second period.

GAME FACTS
  • The Pioneers were 1-for-4 on the power play, while the Purple Knights were 1-for-6.
  • The Purple and Gold held the advantage on faceoffs, 36-30.
  • The Purple Knights blocked eight shots while the Pioneers deferred six.  
THE ACTION
  • The Pioneers struck first when Nevers scored on the rebound at 8:46 of the first period.
  • Sacred Heart extended their lead to two at 16:36 when Wisnewski scored from the left circle on a tough angle but picked the close upper corner of the net.
  • The power-play unit extended the lead to three for the Pioneers at 9:32 in the second period as Antonakis scored from the left circle, assisted by sophomore Julianna Koman.
  • Langbacka put the Purple Knights on the board at 12:51 on the power play along the goal line, sneaking the puck past the goaltender.
  • The Pioneers bounced back in the third period, when Limke scored at 2:43 by protecting the puck through the left circle and finished in front of the crease.
  • The final goal of the afternoon was netted 26 seconds later when Nevers gathered a loose puck on the rebound and slotted it into the net.
