Women's Ice Hockey Falls to Sacred Heart, 1-0, in NEWHA Action

SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. - The Saint Michael's College women's ice hockey team lost to Sacred Heart University, 1-0, to begin a New England Women's Hockey Alliance (NEWHA) weekend set on Friday night at Cairns Arena.

THE ACTION
  • The Pioneers began the first period by attempting four shots in the first three minutes, but only one reached the net. Kelly and Quinn both blocked a shot and Lavender made one save.
  • Petruno made three saves in a span of nine seconds beginning at 10:31 of the first period as the Purple Knights pressed the Pioneers for a steady span.
  • Late in the period, the Pioneers broke the stalemate when Helgeson put a shot on net from the right circle that Lavender saved with her blocker. Antonakis was able to scoop the rebound and score from in front of the crease at 16:39 to score what would eventually be the game-winner.
  • Senior Mikaela Langbacka (Lorton, Va./Washington Pride) put two shots on goal within 16 seconds of each other starting at 15:22 of the second period, though both were saved by Petruno.
  • Sophomore Emersynn McGillis (Ottawa, Ontario/Nepean Jr. Wildcats) took two shots on net in the early goings of the third period, though Petruno preserved her shutout by saving both of the defender's attempts.
  • The goalies prevailed for the remainder of the game, saving a combined 20 shots in the third period, and Sacred Heart held onto the 1-0 victory.
