McCarthy Nets Two as Men's Ice Hockey Falls to Babson, 6-3

SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. - The Saint Michael's College men's ice hockey team fell to Babson College, 6-3, on Friday night at Cairns Arena in non-conference play. Sophomore Quinn McCarthy (Melrose, Mass./Holderness School) scored twice and first-year Brayden Naumann (Boston, Mass./Dexter Southfield School) netted his first career goal for the Purple Knights in the loss.

GAME FACTS
  • The Purple Knights blocked 17 shots while Babson only blocked six.
  • With 1,416 career saves, Murphy is now nine saves away from tying Tim Decker '20 for eighth in program history.
  • This is the second time this season that McCarthy has tallied two goals in a game, the other being the Purple Knights' 6-4 victory over Manhattanville College on Oct. 28.
THE ACTION
  • The Beavers scored just 1:25 into the game when Rooney scored on the rebound from Kennedy's one-timer off the faceoff win to put Babson up 1-0.
  • Babson doubled its lead at 18:57 in the first period when Ryan Murphy sent a pass from behind the net to a crashing George, who took a wrist shot that found the upper right corner of the cage to make the score 2-0.  
  • Babson scored its third straight goal at 10:34 of the second period on the power play as George scored his second goal of the night on helpers from Driscoll and senior Colby Bailey.
  • The Purple Knights scored their first goal of the afternoon at 12:47 when Dukes sent a shot on net that Naumann perfectly deflected past the Babson goaltender to make the score 3-1.
  • McCarthy netted his first of the afternoon at 16:50 in the second period after stealing the puck from a Babson defender and driving towards the net and slotting the puck past the goaltender to put the Purple Knights within one.
  • Babson finished the second period by scoring with 54 seconds left as Rooney tallied for the second time of the game after a pass from Kennedy in the middle led him to a one-timer that snuck past Marshall Murphy to the right side of the net.
  • McCarthy scored his second of the game at 5:21 in the third period when Bloom made a pass to Tauriainen across center ice and Tauriainen crossed through the crease for McCarthy, who tapped in the third Purple Knight goal of the game to put Saint Michael's back within one.
  • George scored his third goal of the game at 9:29 in the third period on helpers from sophomore Charlie Andriole and Ryan Murphy to give Babson a 5-3 lead.
  • The Beavers solidified their win with a goal from Joslin at 15:51 assisted from junior Matt Cormier and sophomore Nolan Dion.
