Women's Basketball Defeats Goldey-Beacom, 81-78, in Non-League Play

COLCHESTER, Vt. - The Saint Michael's College women's basketball team downed non-conference foe Goldey-Beacom College, 81-78, on Saturday at the Ross Sports Center.

GAME FACTS
  • The Purple Knights improved to 3-2 in the all-time series, including 2-0 at home. Saint Michael's knocked off Goldey-Beacom for the first time since Dec. 30, 2008.
  • Saint Michael's was bolstered by a 12-for-27 (44.4%) three-point performance while holding the visitors to a 4-for-13 (30.8%) showing.
  • The Purple Knights benefited from a key 22-12 lead in points off of turnovers.
THE ACTION
  • On the strength of 5-for-6 shooting, the Purple Knights forged a 12-4 lead by 7:46 of the opening quarter, as Amber Furch buried a pair of three-pointers.
  • Junior Julie McCarron's lay-in trimmed the Goldey-Beacom deficit to 14-12 at 4:47, but the Purple and Gold later used a 12-5 run to push the lead to 29-19 when Amber Furch knocked down a pair of free throws with 7:13 left in the second.
  • Yoder's lay-up made it a 34-28 game with 2:02 left, but each Furch sister assisted one another on a triple in the final 53 seconds. The hosts led 40-30 at halftime.
  • Saint Michael's led by as many as 13 points in the third stanza, but the Lightning countered with a go-ahead 23-6 run, grabbing a 69-65 advantage on Yoder's put-back at 7:33 of the fourth.
  • Goldey-Beacom led by five with 6:20 to go before Talbot hit go-ahead freebies at 5:15 (73-72), and Slaven drained a go-ahead three with 3:48 left (76-74). After Varela drove for the tying bucket with 3:29 left, Franchi's put-back with 3:03 remaining gave the hosts a 78-76 edge.
  • Between 2:40 and 31 seconds, Slaven pulled three defensive rebounds while rejecting a pair of Goldey-Beacom shots, and Santos' basket at 1:30 produced a four-point lead.
  • Ciszkowski's hoop eight seconds later made it a two-point contest, but the visitors missed their final three shots in the closing 35 seconds, and Amber Furch made one free throw with 0.2 seconds left before intentionally missing the second.
