Men's Tennis Wins Final Three Singles Matches to Clinch 5-2 Victory at Bentley

WALTHAM, Mass. - The Saint Michael's College men's tennis team snapped a tie by winning each of the final three singles matches in three sets to knock off Bentley University, 5-2, during Northeast-10 Conference play on Friday at Brandeis University's Cordish Tennis Center.

LEADERS MATCH FACTS
  • With 58 career wins between singles and doubles, Barroso passed Kevin Birch '93 (57) to take over fourth in program history. Barroso also moved into a tied for seventh in singles wins (28).
  • Saint Michael's won for the second time in its last three trips to Bentley.
  • With the Purple Knights' fall slate now complete, they head into the spring semester one win out of first place in the NE10 standings.
THE ACTION
  • Barroso and Du Plessis improved to 3-0 this season with a 6-3 victory at No. 1 doubles before Effler and Macpherson moved to 4-1 behind a 6-4 win in the third spot, clinching the visitors a 1-0 lead.
  • Van den broek began singles play with a 6-4, 6-0 triumph in the third slot, advancing to a team-best 5-2 this season, but Bentley responded with wins at No. 4 and 5 to tie the match. In the latter, first-year Benji Hegedus-Kyster (Budapest, Hungary/British International School Budapest) narrowly lost a 6-1, 1-6, 6-4 decision.
  • Du Plessis followed with a 2-6, 6-0, 6-3 comeback victory at No. 1, putting the Purple Knights on top for good, and Lundholm made his season singles debut by earning the clinching point in the sixth spot behind a 6-2, 2-6, 6-4 win.
  • Barroso added a comeback win of his own at No. 2 for good measure, ending the day by securing a 2-6, 6-0, 7-6 (7-5) decision.
