Women's Ice Hockey Takes Down Post, 1-0, Sweezey Earns First Coaching Win

SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. – First-year Julia Chedel (Haverhill, Mass./Kimball Union Academy) scored her first career goal to help propel the Saint Michael's College women's ice hockey team to a 1-0 win over Post University in New England Women's Hockey Alliance (NEWHA) action on Saturday afternoon in Cairns Arena. Head coach Meghan Sweezey '10 earned her first career victory in her first season at the helm.

  • The Purple Knights blocked 21 shots while the Eagles only blocked four.  
  • Post held a 34-26 advantage on faceoffs.
THE ACTION
  • The two squads were backed by great goaltending in the first 10 minutes, as DeMarinis and Saunders both made four saves to keep the score at 0-0.
  • Gratton had an opportunity to score a power-play goal in front of the crease at 13:21, but her attempt was stopped by Saunders.
  • DeMarinis made a crucial stop at 14:03, shutting down Post's breakaway chance by making a save with the blocker on sophomore Jet Devlin's wrist shot.
  • Late in the second period, the Eagles had three chances within a 12-second span, with DeMarinis making two saves after first-year Rowyn Ringor's initial chance at 17:11 hit the post.
  • Chedel scored on a slap shot from the top of the left faceoff circle at 8:25 in the third period on the power play on assists from Gerebi and Jarvis.
  • The Eagles pulled Saunders with 2:16 left to play in an attempt to equalize with an extra skater, but a cross-checking penalty with a minute left forced her back to the cage. The Purple Knights possessed in the final seconds to secure the win.
